Life after coronavirus

When everything around the world is standstill due to the Pandemic, what else to write about!!!!. Previously an article about " Corona virus and Mental health" was published in my blog page, which received a good response. It is more important  how useful it was, than the response. Even if it had helped a single person in overcoming the disturbance due to lock down, I would consider it as a grand success. The same ideas can be implemented during normal times also. Link for the article is given below for anyone who would like to read http://allwynanddiana.blogspot.com/2020/04/corona-virus-and-mental-health.html

Impact of coronavirus (nCOV-19), is going to be permanent on the whole world. When the pandemic was declared by WHO, most of the countries except a few resorted to lock down. People around the world showed a lot of resilience in handling the lock down, as well as governments around the world. Governments kept the essential supply chain moving and worked hard to control the situation. After almost 60-70 days of lock-down, its time to open the economy though not in totality but in a phased manner. We are going to live with a new normal, post COVID-19 pandemic which includes, Mandatory Social distancing, wearing masks in public, reduced gatherings etc..  When the lock down was imposed the economic activities didn't come to a standstill, but kept moving, though slowly. One of the main factor which kept the economy moving is the Internet(Information Technology) and Telecommunication.  Most of us continued to work from home, had online meetings, Schools started online classes, Stock markets continued to trade, OTT platforms Netflix, amazon prime and many more continued to entertain the people.

In this article we will have a look at how the Information Technology is going to influence post pandemic lives, from the context of Student, Professional, family & community. The main reason for choosing this topic is that, I truly believe these changes are more likely to happen, so we should be  prepared  in-terms of  mindset, furniture, having good connectivity, Software & hardware requirements. I also want this to happen as this will reduce movement thereby saving time, money and help reduce pollution to some extent.

Students: In some countries the semester were starting, In some other countries the semesters were about to end when the world went into lock-down.. The schools were quick and swift to start the online classes to patch the lost time which later developed into full fledged classroom (Zoom, Google class room). Post Corona  schools would definitely explore the opportunities to utilize the Internet platform. I guess that schools could go for online course hours every week say 20 out of 40 hours. The assignments and home works will be submitted and evaluated online in digitally hence reducing the paper work. Such model will also be very useful for those who continue to study while working. They can attend online classes rather than going to the campus.

Professionals: Offices are always supposed to be or believed to be designed for maximum efficiency before lock-down. During lock down the efficiency achieved working from home has raised a question on our orthodox model of work space. If working from office is 80% efficient and work from home is 75% efficient, which in my opinion is not big drop. Applications like MS teams, Webex etc.. kept us connected throughout. Meetings were conducted in these platforms with out requiring to be physically present in the meeting room. It doesn't take long for companies to realize that savings are way higher than losses due to drop in efficiency working from home.  Work from home requires reduced office space, lesser electricity bills and the list continues. So professionals be prepared to work remotely.

Family: Families see this as an value added service, as all deliveries come to their door steps like never before. Families go to cinemas, theaters , concerts etc for entertainment whereas, post corona entertainment will directly come to our home through satellite channels and OTT platforms in a different scale. Families can spend more time together as, online course and work from home gives them flexibility and save time by doing their work from where they are.

Communities: With more and more offices adopting de-centralized operating model, the need for people moving to bigger cities to work is going to reduce in numbers. It is clearly established with technology most of the work can be done remotely. Post corona Micro Business using the Information Technology channels will increase creating more and more livelihood. Anyone can start micro business anywhere without high investment and infrastructure. All they need is a small storage area, Internet and delivery system. With micro business growing there will be increase in per capita Income.

If these changes happen post corona, we would be moving from centralized operation model to decentralized model which will reduce the need for huge infrastructure, save travel time and save money. We need to wait and see the feasibility of de-centralized operation model and how this idea is received by the public. Every time a major catastrophe or pandemic or war happens, humans have never shun away. Through creativity and innovation humans have bounced back strongly and will bounce back sharply post corona too. Lets all hope that the destruction caused by the current pandemic is minimum and we return to new normalcy( Online classes, Remote working, increased family time & flourishing of micro business)soon.
