Points to Consider While Buying Used Excavators

The actual Construction work of various infrastructure and housing projects is about to kick-start or escalate from October, which usually stagnates during monsoon period between June and September.

Many big and small construction companies who had projects in their hand, but waiting for monsoon to get over to begin actual projects, would now look for various types of construction equipment either new or used.

Therefore, the sale of different new and used construction machinery will see the demand from October, as people start buying machine to start the construction work to complete the projects on its deadline. Infrastructure projects require different types of construction equipment which can be either new or used machine.  Equipment which is used in road building may not be required in constructing housing project, but excavator is one of the few machines which is versatile in its functionality and can be used in different types of construction projects.

In the last few years the demand for used construction equipment including excavator has jumped in the country, as excavator is a very costly machine and due to the same it can create viability constraints in buying a new excavator for many individuals or small companies. Therefore, many contractors or construction companies prefer to either buy used excavators or rent this machine.

However, buying any used construction equipment is not as easy as buying a new machine.

Therefore, one must do some home works or keep few important things in mind when we go to purchase or inspect the used excavators, even buying used excavator is not an economical affair.  Price of even some used excavators could go well over Rs 50 lakh depending upon model, size, brand, working condition, make year and other factors.

These are the important points which we must remember when going to buy the used excavators, which would help you to make the right decision or protect you from being cheated.

1. Every machine has a limited working life span, so do for excavators, so always prefer the excavators which used for lesser hours so that you can use it for long,  most used excavators come in lower price.

2.  While inspecting the excavators, ensure correct number of hours is logged on the machine, if meter hour is not working, then check the control pedals for wear, excess wear indicate excavator has extra operating hours logged than noted.

3   Before buying, physically check the machine or take along operator with you, who can check the machine by operating it and ensure the excavator is in proper condition. As damages inside the excavators further cost you heavily in repairing and reason of purchasing used machine may not be met.

4  Ask your operator or technician to check the slew ring, because damaged slew ring would cost you heavily as this is the most costly item to replace.

5  Check all the connection points of the excavators, particularly between stick, boom and bucket and see the movement of these parts.

6  Ensure there is no leakage in hydraulic cylinders and tubes and make sure cylinders is not bent.

7  Check the bucket teeth for scalloping, because due to excessive use over the period of time, the shape of teeth bends and warps which reduce the cutting force at the time digging.

8  Check the tracks performance and ensure both the tracks are rotating equally.

9 Properly check the engine oil leakages, air cleaner system, the cooling system of the excavator, damaged cooling system could cause engine overheat.

10  Always remember the nature of your construction work, because many of you are seasoned excavators users and may not have much idea about different sizes of the excavators. These are mini-excavators,  medium- excavators and large-excavators, so always take help from expert before buying excavators, because price of the different size of excavators are different and if your work can be done with a mini-excavator then why  end-up paying more for large-excavator.

11  Buyer must satisfy himself by asking various question regarding the machine, like  owner history, capacity of excavator, how long it has been in used, reason of selling, service record and details of the problem in the machine.

12   If you are buying online, minutely inspect the picture of the excavator which is for sale, online portal like www.equipmentonestop.com also arranges on-site visit for the buyer before finalising the deal of any used construction equipment.

Along with other points, the above mentioned points should also be considered before purchasing used excavator online or through dealers.
