3 Ways to Advance Your Career in Just a Few Weeks

When you have been in the same position for a while, it may feel like you are stuck in a rut. One solution is, of course, to simply quit and look for another job – yet, there may be more chances to progress with your current job than you thought.

Use the effort you would have put into hunting for a new job to expand your Skill set and push your Career forward instead and you might find that the progression you were looking for was right in front of you the whole time.

Here is a handful of great tips on how to advance your career without moving sideways.

Find a New Challenge

The best way to get your hard work noticed is to communicate that you’re, in fact, looking for more challenges. It’s important that you first figure out what kind of challenge you have in mind, so ask yourself what skills you would like to Improve or gain before you get started. What are your strengths and weaknesses, for example, and what can you do to make yourself a stronger candidate?

If you are looking to improve your people skills, you can always offer to coach employees or take on other kinds of developmental assignments. Use the same kind of mindset for whatever skill you’d like to improve and you’re already well on your way to impressing the rest of your team.

Also, if you have an open-minded boss that you’re on good terms with, take some time to have a chat with her or him to talk about how you can develop your career and find new challenges. Chances are that, by merely putting yourself out there, your ambitiousness will be noticed by the right people.

Look for Temporary Assignments

When you want to make advancements in your career for the long-term rather than just making more money, it’s a good idea to find something to do on the side. The great thing is that you can pick from the top shelf as money isn’t really what you’re aiming for, at the moment, and volunteering to improve your people skills or take on a temporary assignment in another department of your company could give you the boost you’re looking for.

This is, of course, something you need to look at after you’ve established your strengths and weaknesses. Have a chat with your boss about this and remember to mention it if you’d like to look at an online MA education as many companies offer to cover the fees. At least the good ones do, as they realise that the knowledge you bring back will benefit them as well.

Network within your Company

Last but not least, you should look for opportunities in the people you work with every day. Or, even better, stretch yourself a bit further and ask someone from a different department to coach you on something you’d like to learn – that way, you’re networking and developing your skills at the same time.

When it comes to advancing your career at your current job, it’s really all about getting noticed. This is rather easy when you’re genuinely looking to improve your skills and become a better employee – particularly if the rest of them are simply drifting by.
