Google Search Algorithm – How PageRank works and how to improve

There are so many bloggers and website developers who are still living on keyword searching ideas and making it the top priority for SEO and PageRank improvements. I am going to write about Google search algorithm in short. No doubt that is very true and correct approach but isn’t there more to it? To everyone’s surprise, there are over 200 factors which are being considered by Google to show results on their page for a keyword. Not that keyword is not one of the thing that could get you at that spot where you are aiming but there are more things than that and understanding those features is really important. I would also like to raise a point here that PageRank is for a particular webpage, not a whole website although PageRank of each page on your website judges the final rank of your website and its other pages.

Keywords

We all know the keyword is important for SEO. Having keyword in heading of the article, first two sentences and then spread it nicely few times in the article will sure help you a lot. You need to see the competition for the particular keyword, searches happening globally and you are good to go. There is a tool Keyword Planner which will be able to help you the most.

The best method would be to choose those keywords on which you can write a unique content and competition is around 10,000 or so globally for websites being developed initially. Other point that should be kept in mind is to choose long keywords than writing on short keywords. long keywords are rather unique and get you better hits.

Page linking

Now this is what I was talking about as the major factor but I will write briefly about this at this time. I would like to expand this in a different article on some other day. Anyway, PageRank is decided heavily on links you have on your particular webpage and importantly, how many pages link you back and what is the quality of those pages. This is very important to note since the pages that link to your webpage and pages your webpage is linking towards must be of high quality and high PageRank (PR). That is why it is asked to share posts on social networking sites. Google search algorithm depends on more than 200 factors and Google hasn’t revealed those factors, any of them in fact.

Where on that page is placed your links also counts. If your page is backlinked in authors bio section, well, that wouldn’t count much really than what is would be if it was in the text of the page. Another factor would be interlinking on all webpages to link themselves. As I said, we will get back on this again in coming posts.

The Algorithm

I wanted to actually write on this topic but needed to write a little about few factors so you can understand this very section. Actually, the algorithm is a mathematical thing and Google founders, Page and Brin, while they were student derived equations for this algorithm and Google started working on those algorithms only which changed several thousands of time after that.

This is one equation they submitted in one of the publications.
PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

where
PR(A) is the PageRank of page A,
PR(Ti) is the PageRank of pages Ti which link to page A,
C(Ti) is the number of outbound links on page Ti and
d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1.

If we see carefully, this equation is mostly about page links to and from a website.

Consider only three webpages, A, B and C on a search keyword and how they link to each other:

If you see above,
A: two outbound links and one inbound link from C
B: one outbound and one inbound link
C: two inbound and one outbound link to A

Since page C has two inbound and one outbound link as compares to page A where its reversed, the preference will be given to page C over A and page B will remain at last since it has one inbound and one outbound link.

So, if these pages were to ranked, the order would be C, A, B. This was just about three pages but there are several pages on Web. This is being done on each page using over 200 different factors used by Google.

Conclusion

There are many things that play important role in PageRanking deciding where your page should appear and hence you must carefully understand about PageRank and Google algorithm before working on it. Also, this is just about how a website is linked. This is one of the major factors but this is not the only factor that gets you on better rank. There are several other factors that play important roles these days in better SEO.
