India has always been known for its rich art and cultural heritage and over time, artists from all over the country have contributed to its legacy.

 Although contributions of many such artists have remained out of the exposed aperture of today’s media and Indian youth interests in general.

 So. here is the list of ten of India’s most talented painters who have had played a major role in revolutionizing country’s art scene over the years and still hold a pivotal role in the development of artistic platform for talented youth all over the country. 

1. Amrita Sher-gil-

Amrita Shergil was an eminent Indian painter born to a Punjabi Sikh father and a Hungarian Jewish mother, sometimes known as India’s Frida Kahlo.

Today considered an important woman painter of 20th century India, whose legacy stands on a par with that of the Masters of Bengal Renaissance.

2. Rabindranath Tagore-

Notable Works– Geetanjali, Indian and Bagladeshi National Anthem, Rabindra Sangeet

 Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

3. Jamini Roy-

Jamini Roy was honoured with the State award of Padma Bhushan in 1955. He was one of the most famous pupils of Abanindranath Tagore, whose artistic originality and contribution to the emergence of modern art in India remains unquestionable.

He drew inspiration and style from folk art and further interpreted in an innovative way.

4. Abanindranath Tagore-

Abanindranath Tagore was the principal artist and creator of “Indian Society of Oriental Art”.

  He was also the first major exponent of Swadeshi values in Indian art, thereby founding the influential Bengal school of art, which led to the development of modern Indian painting.

 He was also a noted writer, particularly for children. Popularly known as ‘Aban Thakur’, his books Rajkahini, Budo Angla, Nalak, and Khirer Putul are landmarks in Bengali language children’s literature.

5. Raja Ravi Varma-

Raja Ravi Verma was a celebrated Indian painter and artist. He is considered among the greatest painters in the history of Indian art for a number of aesthetic and broader social reasons.

 His works are held to be among the best examples of the fusion of European techniques with a purely Indian sensibility.In particular, his depictions of Hindu deities and episodes from the epics and Puranas have received profound acceptance from the public and are found, often as objects of worship, across the length and breadth.

6. Tyeb Mehta-

 Tyeb Mehta was a noted Indian painter. He was part of the noted Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group.

 Among his most noted later paintings were his triptych Celebration, which when sold for Rs 15 million ($317,500) at a Christie’s auction in 2002, was not only the highest sum for an Indian painting at an international auction, but also triggered the subsequent great Indian art boom.

7. Nandalal Bose-

Nandlaal Bose was one of the pioneers of modern Indian art and a key figure of Contextual Modernism.A pupil of Abanindranath Tagore, Bose was known for his “Indian style” of painting. 

 He became the principal of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan in 1922. He was influenced by the Tagore family and the murals of Ajanta; his classic works include paintings of scenes from Indian mythologies, women, and village life.

Archaelogical Survey of India, declared his work to be considered as “art treasures”, with works of 9 other artists.

8. Jatin Das-

Indian painter and sculptor.

 Settler and founder of JD Centre of Art.

9. S.Ḥ. Raza-

His works are mainly abstracts in oil or acrylic, with a very rich use of color, replete with icons from Indian cosmology as well as its philosophy.

 He was awarded the Padma Shri and Fellowship of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1981, Padma Bhushan in 2007, and Padma Vibhushan in 2013. 

 He was conferred with the highest French civilian honour, the Commandeur de la Legion d’honneur (Legion of Honour) on July 14, 2015.

10. Satish Gujral-

 Satish Gujral is an Indian painter, sculptor, muralist, graphic designer, writer and architect of the post-independent era.

  He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
