Hari Mohanan's Invisible Wings - Must Watch

Tags: wing film hari

These days, not often does one come across an enduring product in film form. So, when it does, the adulation knows no bounds, for it harbours a hope of emulation by the film fraternity at large.
Hari Mohanan, an introspective filmmaker from Kerala, makes a visibly powerful statement with  Invisible Wings, his moving tribute to the indomitable spirt and the unconventional ethos of the tea-seller couple Mohana and Vijayan which has till date been to over 16 countries across the globe. These are not your everyday globetrotters craving for Facebook posterity, travel is a way of life for them; they 'arrive' anew each time they reach a new place and return to Kochi.

Hari keeps the protagonist centre stage throughout the delightful documentary, unfolding his vision, mission and philosophy of life,  as much through words as through the purposeful backdrop - a blend of Kerala's scenic splendour, as also an endearing collage of Vijayan's tea shop, home, and emblematic travel postcards. Hats off to Hari, Athira, and Sumit for the excellent teamwork evident in the direction, screenplay, and editing!

This is one movie to hear and watch with equal attention. Every frame rhymes well with the larger cause, so does Anil Johnson's music and Shyam Joseph's cinematography,  reminiscent of the introspective cinema of Ray, Ghatak, Aravindan, Bergman et al. In fact, I was instinctively reminded of Wild Strawberries in the way the protagonist speaks his heart out on existential issues in a refreshingly matter-of-fact manner.

Hats off to Mohana and Vijayan for the heady brew forming the film's subject matter; a filmmaker could not have asked for better motifs and metaphors to be unleashed on screen.

Vijayan speaks through his eyes. You simply can't miss the conviction; the good news is that it is contagious. You will instantly feel like jumping off the cliff only to build your wings on the way down, following Ray Bradbury's recommendation down to a tee.

Relish and cherish this film and please spread the good word around!
