Flippa Changed Their Prices!? Is It Even Worth It Now?

I was headed to Flippa to put up a bunch of new domain name auctions since I enjoy their platform and to my surprise, the prices changed…a lot.

This caught me completely off guard.

And yes, I know this change isn’t necessarily new. I’m guessing I haven’t used their platform in a few months since the changes took place.

If you aren’t familiar with the exact changes I am referring to, here’s the lowdown. When you go to Flippa to sell your domain names, they charge you a flat fee of $9 per domain auction.

First off, I was never crazy about this upfront cost because their are several auction platforms that you could use for free.

The ones that initially come to mind are Godaddy & Namejet. Those are two of the major players when it comes to domain name auctions.

Want proof?

Take a look at Namebio and look at the “Venue” tab. You will see a ton of sales coming from these two places.

Anyway getting back to my main point, Flippa has many things that I think separate it from other platforms such as:

  • Auction Description – Flippa gives you the ability to “pre-sell” your domain name. Yes, I know if your domain name is good, it should’t require much convincing but either way being able to point out a few benefits about why someone should buy your domain doesn’t hurt.
  • Account Watchers – This is something that’s pretty cool and not something many people talk about. As you build up your reputation on Flippa and list more auctions, people may begin to “watch you” as a seller. As they do this, they will get updates on any NEW auctions you put up. That’s pretty powerful.
  • Relist For Free – If your auction doesn’t sell or hit your reserve, you have the option to relist it one time for free.
  • Flippa Escrow – Flippa gives you a small discount on the commission of a sale if you use their Flippa Escrow service. I’ve never had an issue with it that I can remember and works well.
  • Second Chance Offer – I may be titling this wrong but I LOVE being able to give a second chance offer to people who were watching my auction and may not have put in a bid. I have had auctions that DID NOT sell but used this neat little function to still strike a deal with a buyer.

So as you can see, I do like using Flippa and like what they have to offer. But I also know that the new fee change is going to drastically change my strategy for auctioning off my domain names.

What’s the change exactly?

From what I can see, they changed their fee for domain auction from $9 per auction to $25 per auction. That’s a 177.7% increase!

Definitely not sustainable for my business.

I know what many people are saying in regards to this and that is “This is going to keep a majority of the crappy names of the platform”.

Yeah, I guess that’s true. But for us, it’s more than likely going to keep us away from this platform as well. I would only consider it if I had a mind blowing type domain I wanted to auction. But more than likely, I probably wouldn’t use this platform for that type of domain anyway.

So those are my thoughts with this change regarding Flippa’s pricing. How do you feel about it? Is it going to effect you in any way?
