Control Your Privacy On Facebook-Seven Effective Tips

The recent report of unauthorized sharing of data has landed Facebook in trouble. The news has also raised serious concerns about privacy among millions of its users.

Here are some tips to stay safe if you belong to these millions.

  1. Check the apps

The New York Times recently published a story on How Cambridge Analytica acquired user data. According to it, someone built an app. It focused on personal quiz about a user and his/her friends. The owner of the app then shared that information with the company.

Facebook apps ask permission to access a number of things on a user’s profile. At times, it may cause problems for you. The best way is to remain alert. Check the apps you give permission at regular intervals. If any of them is of no use, just delete it.

Open your Facebook account. Go to settings>apps. Review each one and delete the ones you don’t need.

  1. Modify your privacy settings

Facebook offers many options for its users to modify its Privacy Settings. Unfortunately, most of us are not familiar with them. Go to settings>privacy and modify it as per your preferences. It lets you decide who will see your posts. You can also make changes in your timeline.

  1. Make your old posts private

You may have made your profile private. But your old posts may remain public. Go to settings>who can see my stuff. Explore them and make necessary changes.

  1. Practice utmost caution when accepting friend requests

Accept requests from those whom you know. You may consider requests from mutual friends. Still, utmost caution is advised in this regard.

  1. Download your Facebook data

Facebook lets its users download the data it has about them. Make good use of it. Doing it regularly will give you an idea of what the company knows about you. It will also help you stay safe from fatal mistakes.

  1. Prevent friends from tagging you

You may have fed up with untagging yourself from inappropriate photos. Go to the privacy settings and determine who can tag you. You may also stop people from adding things to your timeline.

  1. Create a strong password

This is the most repeated advice people generally receive. But most of us simply ignore it. Make your password difficult to guess for others. Make it a mixture of small letters, capital letters and numbers. And don’t forget to change it at regular intervals

You may use a reliable password manager for the purpose. It will take care of all your passwords. You just have to remember a password you set for the tool.

Even your best efforts are not going to offer full-proof guarantee. Still, you can monitor who sees your data.
