Food Review: VB Signature, Pure Vegetarian Fine Dining Restaurant in Chennai

VB Signature from the house of Namma Veedu Vasantha Bhavan is all set to take you down the memorable culinary experience ofcourse Vegetarian in its newly opened restaurant at Nungambakkam High Road – Opposite KFC,  Next to Univercell showroom.  Invited for a tasting session, we went there wondering what to expect from the typical South Indian restaurant and we were in for a surprise.

Greeted by the Chef Vignesh, we were given the menu which sounded much like a typical fine dining experience.  We grew quite curious as we set onto order a drink and the options we saw made it clear that it is going to be a experience of a different kind.  We began our food tasting with Ilaneer Inji Soda and VB Signature Filter Coffee Soda.  The other options available were Curry Leaves Mojito,  Home Made Chai Soda,  Aam Panna,  Bovonto  Black Mojito and many more options.

Ilaneer Inji Soda had Inji (Ginger) a bit more and we simply loved it.VB Signature Filter Coffee soda is a must try for madras coffee lovers and it talks coffee coffee all the way.

We began our starters session with Tandoori Momos, Cauliflower hashbrown, Marina Milaga Bajji,  Thai Style Koththu Parota, Stuffed Ceylon Parota, and  Keema Curry dosa and Chili Paneer Noodles.

Loved the presentation of Tandoori Momos and happy to see Master Chef style dishes and surprisingly, we even had dishes with theatre in it.  Sauces were served in fillers and wow! It was awesome and gave us control as we added it to the dish.  The dish was awesome and for those who expect a thin layer of outer covering of Momos,  this had a thicker skin but we liked it when we took it together as a bite with the stuffing.  It had mint chutney, roasted tomato garlic chili chutney and curried yoghurt mayonnaise as its sauces.

The Cauliflower hashbrown was simply awesome served with cauliflower puree and tomato pickle mayonnaise, all we could do is drool over this perfectly prepared deep fried goodness.

Marina milaga bajji had nothing to do with Marina beach’s milaga bajji but was stuffed with potatoes and cheese crumbled with Japanese Panko crumbs served with Tamarind chili chutney.  We could never say a No to it ever.

Thai style Koththu Parota sang Thai all the way and the soft tender koththu parota was a standalone meal  by itself.  Curd Raita is available on request as accompaniment but we refrained from using it to enjoy the Thai flavors – mildly flavored Lemongrass n herbs.

Who ever thought Margarita Cheese is the domain of Pizza has to think twice with this amazing stuffed Ceylon parota with double cheese Margarita.  We have other stuffing too – Paneer butter masala, mushroom pepper fry, kalyana urulai masala.  This was served with Jeera raita and this goes as one of the best raitha we had till now.

Kheema curry dosa was yummy and had the signature Namma Veedu Vasanta Bhavan sambar and coconut chutney.  This had all the elements to make Pizza lovers fall in love with it.

Chennai culinary scene is competing with amazing vegetarian cuisine and Now to the theatre Master Chef Heston Blumenthal style.  Chef Vignesh walks in with a bowl and it is smoke everywhere and pop comes the caramel popcorn cold n freezing to touch making our palates dance with it.  See the video of Dragon Smoke Popcorn

This is available in normal and caramel flavors. Do not miss this !

We enjoy so much writing about food and when we get the opportunity we do go extempore.  Now onto the main course – it was makkai cheese palak,  Dal Makhni served with pudina paratha and red chili paratha.  We purposely made the side dish as the main dish because it stole the show.  Dal Makhni was cooked over 15 hours over slow fire – North Indian foodies do not miss out the Dal Makhni here.  Makkai cheese palak  was good too.

Chilli Paneer noodles was the next on the list and loved the way paneer was added to the noodles. We do not like crumbled paneer but here it was al dente and made it good as we savored the noodles.

Onto Desserts, we had Milan to Madras – Rosogolla made in Coffee floating in cream.  It made an interesting dish and completed the filter coffee feeling we long for after a meal.  The other dessert was mysore pak crumble which was oven baked as apple pie with fruits.  This was the only one we felt was not bang on.

For a change with the clear motive of sounding ‘Signature’,  VB  serves Honey Mittai and KamarKat with the bill. Make the Honey Mittai ooze out with sweetness and it is a nail on the head.

Thanks to the experience extraordinaire from Chef Vignesh and we certainly wish the quality and quantity is here to stay and maintained throughout for foodies to enjoy awesome vegetarian food with ‘VB Signature’

Right now, VB signature is open for Lunch and Dinner and will soon be open from 11 AM to 11 PM.  This is exclusive division of Namma Veedu Vasantha Bhavan and it will be coming out with its own branches as the other branches will operate as it is now.
