Craving for Traditional Vegetarian South Indian Meals, Head to Andhi Kadai

One of these days, a friend of mine from abroad told me about her longing for a traditional Tamil Vegetarian meal served in plantain leaf with the impact of whiff of freshness on a hungry stomach. It made me contemplate on the meals we had of late where we felt it was just awesome, the contentment of having it full stomach, relishing the lingering Food taste in the mouth and longing for more. Surprising to me,  I had to think a lot to locate few and yet the feeling of absolute satisfaction was really missing.  It almost became like a craving as we started getting feelers on food around the area from various people.  Two places came close to what we wanted from the recommendations we got and one was Andhi Kadai, Velachery and other was Durga Nivas, Nanganallur. Since we were near Velachery, we decided to try out Andhi Kadai.

Time was around 11.50 AM when we entered an almost empty place. We got doubtful if our choice was right and if food was available at that time. Yes, food was available and it was self service.  The cash counter is interesting.  It is filled with Coconut Chikki, packed Litchi pulp, mango pulp like a chocolate priced at Rs.10 each.  We could not help staying from the pulpy affair.  Litchi missed the mark but Mango was a bull’s eye.  Got our food ready in no time, food was real good.  We simply loved the rice and its texture.  Rice has been a big letdown in many places where food was good. Here it turned out to be a Big success factor.  Our menu had  green peas sundal (tasty),  Kootu (yummy),   potato fry,  mango thokku, mix veg sambhar,  rasam and kara kuzhambu ( was slightly sweet but nevertheless nice).  Food moderately spiced, Appalam was crisp and we had second servings of almost everything.  Appalam extra for Rs. 5 was the extra we paid.  We can get extra rice if we require.  Food was wholesome and ensured contentment to the core.  Cost of each meal was Rs.80/- and great value for money paid.

Andhi Kadai also has mini meals in which we get variety rice, 2 chappatis, and curd rice.  Tiffen items are also available and for those millet lovers, they also have millet based food and all are priced nominally.  We are sure to go back there sometime for dinner and also for the breakfast which sounded quite attractive.  Snacks include vadai varieties, kozhukattais – well, for sure, we have couple of visits pending here.

We saw the Swiggy App poster and so must be the restaurant food can be ordered through it.  We are candid reviewers and loved the clean environment. The restaurant is Non-Air-conditioned but has a fan for each table.

Location :

Andhi Kadai, Latha Super market Road, Dhandeeswaram, Velachery, Chennai.  (Pure Vegetarian restaurant)
