An Honest Review of TheraBreath Fresh Breath Oral Rinse (2023 Edition)

As someone who has struggled with Bad Breath for years, I know firsthand just how important it is to find the right solution. That’s why I’m beyond thrilled to share with you my experience with TheraBreath Oral Rinse – a clinically proven mouthwash that has not only helped me regain my confidence but also improved my overall oral health.

In this in-depth review, we’re going to delve into the science behind this remarkable product and learn why it’s so effective in tackling chronic bad Breath and promoting a healthy oral environment.

First, let’s understand the root cause of bad breath – it’s primarily due to anaerobic bacteria living inside our mouths. These bacteria release sulfur compounds, which are volatile in nature, leading to the unpleasant odor we call bad breath. It’s worth noting that a majority (85%) of halitosis cases can be traced back to the oral cavity itself, making it essential to maintain proper oral hygiene.

The key factor for optimal oral hygiene and fresh breath largely depends on the pH levels in our mouths. Ideally, our saliva should maintain a pH of around 6.2 to 7.6. Unfortunately, most of the food and beverages we consume tend to make our mouths more acidic, which can lower the pH and create an environment that allows the cavity-causing bacteria to thrive.

This is where mouthwashes come into play – they have the advantage of reaching areas that floss and toothpaste can’t, while also being able to treat gingivitis, bad breath, and cavities. However, most commercially available mouthwashes are acidic and although they may temporarily kill off the bacteria, they ultimately create an environment for them to regrow faster.

This is where Therabreath sets itself apart from the competition. As an alkaline mouthwash with a pH of 9.82, it not only helps to neutralize the harmful effects of acidic substances but also prevents cavity formation by maintaining a balanced oral environment.

My Review of TheraBreath Oral Rinse

In this blog post, I’ll be giving you my in-depth review of TheraBreath Mouthwash, outlining its taste, ease of use, and effectiveness. Hopefully, you’ll walk away with a better understanding of what this product is all about and whether or not it’s right for you.

What is TheraBreath?

TheraBreath is a brand of dental products created by Dr. Harold Katz from the California Breath Clinics. Developed over two decades ago, it offers solutions like mouthwashes, toothpaste, chewing gums, and lozenges for treating issues like bad breath, tonsil stones, and dry mouth. TheraBreath’s products are based on Dr. Katz’s research into sulfur-producing bacteria, which he identified as a key factor causing these oral health problems.

Active Ingredients

TheraBreath sets itself apart from other mouthwashes on the market through its innovative use of proprietary ingredients and natural elements. The key active ingredient that forms the backbone of TheraBreath’s effectiveness is OXYD-8, a patented version of chlorine dioxide. The oxygen in OXYD-8 targets odor-causing bacteria, stopping them from producing the sulfur compounds responsible for bad breath.

In addition to OXYD-8, the Fresh Breath PLUS formula also contains green tea and other natural elements such as aloe vera, tea tree oil—and xylitol. Xylitol, a natural sweetener, plays a unique dual role in TheraBreath. Not only does it enhance the taste, but it also selectively eliminates bad bacteria while preserving good bacteria in your mouth.

TheraBreath has fewer and clearer ingredients in comparison to its competitors, so you know exactly what’s going into your mouth. In addition, this mouthwash doesn’t contain alcohol—which I appreciate because I find that alcohol-based products cause irritation or dryness in my mouth. Plus, it’s fluoride-free, which is also a bonus for me.

Full List of Ingredients (Icy Mint)

  • Glycerin
  • PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Citric Acid
  • Menthol
  • Sodium Chlorite
  • Sodium Benzoate
  • Sucralose
  • Xylitol
  • Sodium Bicarbonate
  • Water & Flavors

Packaging and Usability

TheraBreath is available in different sizes and packages to accommodate various usage scenarios. I particularly like that it comes in a pack of two large 16 fl oz bottles, making it great to always have a backup for when one bottle runs out. The large size is certainly a plus, ensuring I don’t run out of mouthwash too quickly. I also appreciate the fact that the bottle is BPA-free, adding an extra layer of health safety. The bottles themselves were packaged with care, and adequately bubble-wrapped for protection during shipping.

For people who need to use mouthwash while traveling, a convenient 3-oz bottle is available as well. This TSA-approved size is perfect for taking on trips—I often bring one along when I’m away from home so that my oral hygiene routine stays consistent. If you’re new to TheraBreath, I’d suggest trying the travel-sized bottle first to see if you like it before investing in the larger bottle.

Before using the product, I observed that each bottle was sealed with an orange safety seal, providing reassurance that it had not been tampered with previously. After breaking the seal, I found that the bottle cap conveniently served as a dosage cup. The cup could hold around an ounce of liquid, and the cap itself featured a “Lift ‘n’ Peel” seal for added protection. I found it convenient to keep a bottle at my office, in my car, and at home in my bathroom.

The instructions told me to use a capful to rinse my mouth and then another capful to gargle, but considering the price, that seemed excessive. I found that less than half of the dosage cup was enough for my needs, making the product last much longer.

Taste, Flavors, and Mouthfeel

Regarding the texture and taste of the mouthwash, I noticed it to be fairly clear with a viscosity that’s similar to water. It feels just like swishing flavored water in your mouth. While the texture is different from the more traditional mouthwashes, I became quickly accustomed to it after a few uses.

Unlike Listerine and Colgate mouthwashes that I’ve used before, TheraBreath didn’t leave a burning sensation or sting in my mouth. The formula is gentle and soothing, perfect for my once-irritated tonsils.

The taste of the solution is neither sweet nor bitter, making for a neutral experience. One of the best things about TheraBreath is the variety of flavors and formulas available. The flavors include:

  • Mild Mint
  • Invigorating Icy Mint
  • Sparkle Mint
  • Clean Mint
  • Peppermint
  • Rainforest Mint
  • Tingling Mint

I had the opportunity to try out two of their popular flavors: Mild Mint (green bottle) and Invigorating Icy Mint (blue bottle). Throughout this review, my focus will be on these formulas.

The Mild Mint mouthwash, as the name suggests, has a gentle mint flavor which is inoffensive and great for people who prefer milder taste experiences. I think it’s perfect for children! On the other hand, the Invigorating Icy Mint mouthwash has a relatively mild tingle and a stronger icy flavor. Interestingly, it is sweetened with xylitol, giving it an invigorating icy blast.

Navigating between all the flavors, you’ll find that each has its appeal. Some are subtly sweet, and some are nearly tasteless. But what’s consistent is that they all leave your mouth refreshed, with no adverse aftertaste.

Effectiveness for Bad Breath

Being a dentist-formulated product, TheraBreath certainly lives up to all the hype. Since I started using this rinse, I’ve seen a considerable improvement in my breath, and my mouth feels fresh throughout the day. The amazing thing is, you’ll notice the results in just 30 seconds of use and it lasts up to a staggering 12 hours. All it takes is rinsing half a capful for 1 minute, and you’re good to go.

It’s my go-to remedy for coffee breath, and it has made my gums feel much happier. I’ve heard some people mention that it affected their taste buds, but I didn’t have the same experience at all. Just remember to wait for 5 minutes before eating anything after using this mouthwash.

As part of my oral hygiene routine, I use this mouthwash dutifully twice a day – once in the morning and once just before bed. Of course, I don’t solely rely on TheraBreath; I also use toothpaste, a tongue scraper, and floss regularly. To add an extra layer of protection, in between the rinse times, I also chew xylitol gums. This helps to remove any remaining bacteria from my mouth, as well as reducing the risk of cavities.

Price and Affordability

I absolutely adore the two-bottle deal of TheraBreath mouthwash! Even though it might cost a bit more than some other mouthwashes out there, I think it’s totally worth it.

When I make a purchase from their website, a 16oz bottle usually runs me about $9.95. But, you know, I’ve found out we can save some bucks by getting it for roughly $7.50 on sites like Amazon and other online retailers.

And guess what? I’ve discovered that buying TheraBreath in bundles, like packs of 4 or 12, can save even more money! Plus, the discounts get better with bulk orders. And let’s not forget the occasional coupons, discounts, and promos offered by their website.

For families, they also offer big 1-liter bottles for around $20, which is pretty cool. All in all, while the price tag might look a bit hefty, the quality and the possible savings make it all worth it.

Pros & Cons

REASONS TO BUY
  • No burn because it has no alcohol
  • Gives a super clean feel
  • Works immediately
  • Good for tonsil stones
  • You’ll see a big improvement in dry mouth
  • Convenient travel-sized bottle
REASONS TO AVOID
  • The directions on the bottle could mislead you into consuming too much
  • It’s fairly expensive compared to others

Overall Rating

Overall, I think TheraBreath is an amazing option for those looking for a gentle mouthwash to use consistently. Its alkaline formula helps keep a healthy pH balance in your mouth, promoting great oral health. Plus, it’s ADA-approved!

It’s available in a range of flavors to meet everyone’s particular tastes, and the best thing is that it works instantly, providing fresher breath that can last up to an impressive 12 hours! This has really helped boost my confidence when I’m interacting with people.

Keep in mind, though, that if you’re a fan of the strong, cooling menthol taste, this mouthwash might not excite you. Sometimes, my husband even adds a few drops of spearmint oil for some extra flavor.

For regular use, two bottles have lasted us slightly more than two months. If you’re curious to learn more, I recommend checking out Dr. Katz’s website for some helpful insights.

I wholeheartedly recommend TheraBreath for anyone struggling with persistent bad breath. Unlike other products that merely mask odors, TheraBreath works by eliminating the germs causing the bad breath. Keep in mind that maintaining daily use is crucial, as these germs can return if not tackled consistently. Of course, don’t forget the importance of regular brushing and flossing as well.

Lastly, if you’re still experiencing bad breath despite using a mouthwash, it’s a good idea to consult your dentist or hygienist to identify any underlying causes.
