Best Free VPN for Windows 2020

You’ll get the best free VPN for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and every other device/OS in this list.

Half a decade ago, VPNs were just an option. Primarily used by those who wanted to access blocked websites.

Today, anyone who even wishes to enjoy basic privacy requires a VPN. Without it, your IP address, web activities, transactions and everything else is monitored and controlled.

Most ISPs even block content that they or their govt. believe to be against them. Even you speed is controlled.

And, I do understand not all of you may have the bigger budgets which most VPNs demand. Hence, I’ve got you this list.

Best free VPN for Windows

Note that I’ve not listed a single VPN here which I’ve not personally used.

“Free” isn’t just a keyword either. I actually have listed 100% free VPNs which require absolutely no payments.

Now, I’m personally against free VPNs. Someone rightly said, “if it’s free, you (your information & data) are probably the product”.

Yet, I’ve only listed those free VPNs which are more trustworthy and have an established reputation.

Let’s get you some privacy then?

1. NordVPN

Website: https://nordvpn.com/

Here’s an overview of the VPN:

  • No logs policy: Yes. Verified.
  • Countries: 59
  • Speed: 5/5
  • Simultaneous connections: 6
  • Multihop: Yes
  • Protocols: OpenVPN/ IKEv2/ NordLynx.
  • Based in: Panama.

NordVPN is “the” best VPN out there, period. For starters, it has an “independently verified no logs policy”.

It has been tested and verified by an independent auditing firm- PricewaterhouseCoopers AG, that NordVPN truly doesn’t keep logs.

Most free VPN for Windows (and other OS) keep logs despite their “no logs policy” (e.g. the recently exposed UFO VPN, Rabbit VPN etc.)

So yes, NordVPN is 100% secure. It can’t help law enforcement or other third-parties identify you even if it wanted to, there simply are no logs.

Secondly, I love NordVPN because it’s based in Panama. This offers absolute protection from the stricter governments such as the US or the EU.

It then offers 5212 servers in 59 countries to choose from. You can virtually be in any of these 59 countries!

It also supports P2P and torrenting. But, its “Onion over VPN” server is more of an attraction which allows access to the Tor network even without the TOR browser! Perfect for deep web/dark web enthusiasts.

Then, it offers “Double VPN” which routes your connection not via one, but two servers. This is one of the rarest and most exclusive features that most other VPNs are void of.

And, it even has “Obfuscated” servers for penetrating extreme firewalls and VPN-detections. Heck, you can even use it in China!

It’s “the fastest” VPN I’ve ever tested (and, I’ve tested over 50 so far). It has almost no affect on speed and that’s one of the rarest things to say about a VPN.

The  connection protocols are equally secure (and fast).  It supports OpenVPN, IPSec/IKEv2 and NordLynx (Wireguard). As for the encryption keys, it uses AES-256 bit military-grade encryption.

NordLynx is one of the reasons why it can offer unbreakable security, at unbeatable speed.

The CyberSec feature is an in-built ad blocker and also blocks malicious websites. The kill-switch makes sure you’re only connected to the internet if you’re secure and can’t be traced.

NordVPN allows a single account to be connected to 6 different devices simultaneously! So, you can secure your entire family (and cousins) without spending a penny extra.

It’s one of the only VPNs capable of unblocking foreign Netflix libraries and other streaming services. (Read my NordVPN review for details.)

Your device and OS don’t matter, NordVPN supports everything including Windows, macOS, Android and iOS devices, Linux, Android TV , and even can be used as browser extension.

Don’t buy NordVPN yet, not just based on my words. It offers a 30-day free trial.

Go try it out, even after that it costs less than your daily coffee (around $3.50/month). Surprisingly, it’s the most feature-rich yet the cheapest VPN in the industry.

2. Express VPN

Website: https://www.expressvpn.com/

After NordVPN, the second-best VPN out there is Express VPN.

Here’s the overview:

  • No logs policy: Yes.
  • Countries: 94
  • Speed: 4.5/5
  • Simultaneous connections: 5
  • Multihop: No
  • Protocols: OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, IKev2
  • Based in: British Virgin Islands

Its country-list is one of the most impressive of all the free VPN for Windows. As many as 94 countries are available.

It too doesn’t store logs, but alike most other VPNs out there it’s not verified by any third-party or independent agency.

It supports 5 simultaneous logins. I do believe it’ll still cover most average households, won’t it?

It’s governed by the laws of the British Virgin Islands. Not as privacy-friendly as Panama, but acceptable.

The connection protocols are some of the strongest, they include OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, and IKEv2.

It also boasts a “TrustedServer Technology”. It basically is a feature which makes sure that all the data on a server is reset/deleted once it reboots. Nothing is “saved” on the servers.

The kill-switch is available. An impressive feature is its “Split Tunnelling” feature. It lets you router specific, selected apps/software via the VPN while keeping the others off-VPN.

It’s completely capable of unblocking Netflix as well even though it unblocks less countries than NordvPN.

The speed is more than enough to stream, download and obviously browse the internet.

The 30-day moneyback guarantee makes sure you only pay if you like it.

It’s compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, routers, browser extensions, Linux, smart TVs and game consoles.

3. IPVanish

Website: https://www.ipvanish.com/

Let’s start with the overview:

  • No logs policy: Yes.
  • Countries: 54
  • Speed: 4/5
  • Simultaneous connections: Unlimited
  • Multihop: No
  • Protocols: L2TP/IPSec, IKEv2/ OpenVPN.
  • Based in: U.S

It offers 53 countries to choose from which is an impressive number of choices.

The connection protocols too do not disappoint. It offers IKEv2, OpenVPN, and L2TP/IPSec.

The “no logs policy” exists and no session/identifiable information is stored.

One of its primary attractions is its unlimited simultaneous connections. You can use the same IPVanish account on as many devices as you’d want, no limits whatsoever.

Because it changes the IP address, it too can unblock blocked streaming services.

However, if you specifically need a Netflix unblocking VPN, you better go with one of the other choices mentioned above.

It however does offer obfuscated servers for accessing heavily censored content. P2P and torrenting are supported as well.

Although not a “VPN-feature”, all IPVanish accounts come with 250GB free SugerSync encrypted cloud storage and backup.

Alike ExpressVPN and unlike NordVPN, it doesn’t offer multihop. The traffic is routed via just one country/server at a time.

IPVanish is primarily based in the U.S. it’s a great VPN, which doesn’t store logs, and hence it’s perfect for all activities but just not for the ultra-paranoid.

There’s no direct free trial, however, there is a 30-day moneyback guarantee. The plans start at $6.49/month.

It’s compatible with Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, FireTV, and Linux.

4. ProtonVPN

Website:  https://protonvpn.com/

Let’s first get you introduced to ProtonVPN:

  • No logs policy: Yes, verified.
  • Countries: 51
  • Speed: 3.5/5
  • Simultaneous connections: 10 devices.
  • Multihop: Yes
  • Protocols: OpenVPN/ IKEv2/IPSec
  • Based in: Switzerland

ProtonVPN, as the name hints, is from the globally-acclaimed, anti-surveillance anonymous email provider Protonmail.

For now, it boasts of 1019 servers and 51 country-choices. Being a new player in the grounds, that’s impressive.

Being from the Proton team, “trust” wasn’t a major issue anyway. But, its apps are still open-source and independently audited.

To further make things better, it’s based out of Switzerland. If there’s one country I like more than Panama for privacy, it’s Switzerland.

Its “secure core” is a feature similar to “multi hop”. The traffic is routed via multiple servers before finally leaving the exit node.

It only offers two connection protocols, IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN. Alike NordVPN, it opted out of offering “more” protocols even though they’re cheaper to operate, just because they’re less-secure.

It’s pretty serious about its security. Which is why it houses its servers 1000 meters below the ground, in military bunkers (not controlled by the military, ofcourse.)

Tor over VPN is supported as well just like NordVPN does in addition to P2P.

A single ProtonVPN account can be used on 10 devices at a time,.

It truly is a 100% free VPN for Windows. The free plan offer 3 countries and supports 1 device. All the other paid features still exist on this free plan as well.

You can also use it on Android, Windows, ChromeOS, iOS and Linux.

5. Windscribe

Website:  https://windscribe.com/

These are the primary features that Windscribe offers:

  • No logs policy: Yes.
  • Countries: 63
  • Speed: 3.5/5
  • Simultaneous connections: Unlimited.
  • Multihop: Yes
  • Protocols: IKEv2, OpenVPN, stealth.
  • Based in: Canada.

You can connect to 63 countries using Windscribe. The total location-count (when including cities) will be 110.

The no logs policy exists. This free VPN for Windows only logs your “bandwidth use” and the time of the last session. These are important so it can limit the free accounts.

As for the connection protocols, it supports IKEv2, OpenVPN, and stealth. I didn’t expect double hop to be present, but it is. It also supports P2P.

Has a split personality feature which rotates the user agents. In simpler words, makes it harder to trace/track you.

Split tunnelling is available as well which allows routing selected, specific apps via the VPN.

It has this fancy feature called ScribeForce. It’s basically a “team account” feature which allows creating VPN accounts for teams.

It does market itself as a content unblocker, while that’s true for most content, it doesn’t work great for Netflix libraries.

Another advanced feature is its R.O.B.E.R.T.  It basically is an ad blocker also protects you from malware, viruses and other harmful content.

As for Simultaneous Connections, it offers unlimited connections even on its free plan!

The only problem I have with it is that it’s based in Canada. That’s a member of the Five-Eyes and hence not very privacy-friendly.

It too is compatible with almost all the devices such as Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and as browser extension.

6. Hotspot Shield

Website:  https://www.hotspotshield.com/

These are what define Hotspot Shield:

  • No logs policy: Yes.
  • Countries: 80
  • Speed: 4/5
  • Simultaneous connections: Unlimited.
  • Multihop: No.
  • Protocols: IKEv2, OpenVPN, stealth.
  • Based in: Canada.

If you’re okay with a free VPN for Windows with limited speed, bandwidth and locations, Hotspot Shield is worth a glance.

The country-list with 80+ options is impressive.  It allows sharing the account on 5 devices simultaneously.

Its unblocking capability for Netflix, Hulu, BBC and other such services is commendable.

The speed while obviously not as impressive as NordVPN, is actually better than quite a few paid VPNs out there.

That may be because it only offers 1 protocol– the Hydra Protocol. It’s a protocol the VPN designed for itself.

They claim it to be better (actually, 2.5x faster than OpenVPN) in compatibility, speed and security than all the other commonly available protocols.

The free plan does exist, however, it’s limited at 2Mbps speed and 500MB daily data. Also, only 1 location i.e. the U.S is available to connect to.

Paid plans are a tad-bit expensive and start at $7.99/month. However, it’s backed by a 45-day moneyback guarantee.

Obviously a no logs policy exists. It can be used on macOS, Windows, Android, Linux, Smart TVs, routers, and iOS devices.

Final Words- Best Free VPN for Windows

Let me sum this entire piece up in a few words?

If you’re still not sure which VPN to go with; I’d say no VPN comes close to beating NordVPN. Ironically, it’s also the cheapest VPN on this list.

It’s the best as far as speed, security, support (live-chat), and unblocking-capabilities go.

However, if you need a totally free VPN, Hotspot Shield is the best choice to go with.

All the others options listed on this list truly are the best VPN services in general so far for 2020.

That’ll be all folks. Hit the share button and help a friend avoid censorship and breach of privacy. Help them get a free VPN for Windows (or, for any other OS they use.)
