The Making of Netflix Blockbuster Ghoul

Ghoul, the 2018 Indian web Series streaming presently on Netflix has become a blockbuster admired by thousands of audiences since its release. Based on an Arab folklore, the web series is titled with the name of the monster itself. If you have been following the series and eager to know all those hidden stories from behind the screen of Ghoul, read on! This blog makes an attempt to showcase you all the detailed stories about the making of Ghoul, the second Netflix original from India.

In an interview, Radhika Apte (Nida Rahim), the protagonist of the series throws light upon the initial stage of the making. Patrick Graham, the director of Ghoul approached her for the role with the idea of making a film, a kind of horror mystery like Phantom. Later, the concept of releasing it as a web series on Netflix was irresistible as it had the potential of being much more popular as well as a Global hit. The three production houses, Blumhouse Productions, Phantom Films and Ivanhoe Pictures had a great contribution to the making of the film. When asked how she feels about the long wait and the opportunity from Netflix, Apte puts in: “The wait was worth it!”

As Ghoul was shot as a film at its initial stage, it had to be modified according to the approach of a web series. They had to work on the precision of the content and the overall design while fragmenting it into three series or three layers. When asked about the shooting location, Manav Kaul (Colonel Sunil Dacunha) highlights upon the experience of shooting inside a basement on monsoon season. Shooting for more than fourteen hours every day inside a basement, hollow and damp with horrible smells was a real challenge. Such a claustrophobic and dark atmosphere was itself a horrific experience for the stars.

In spite of all the hard work, they had a lot of fun as Patrick is a very humorous person in nature. While describing the context of the plot, Patrick Graham shows us how Ghoul is different from the other horror series as it has layers of socio-political backdrops. The fascist state or the nature of any nation-state today is symbolic to the claustrophobic atmosphere of Ghoul. The character of Colonel Sunil Dacunha shows the irony of inflicted patriotism. What makes Ghoul really exclusive is the design of the characters, who have been given multiple layers, unlike the flat characters of the usual horror stories.

When asked more about the concept, Patrick answers that the title Ghoul enhances the mystery as it is named after the monster itself. The supernatural elements in stories always make the audience confront their guilt and other dark shades. This way, Ghoul makes an attempt to disturb the audience rather than only entertaining and the purpose of an art is to do the same.

So, when you have all the stories about the making of Ghoul, don’t forget to come back for more. We will keep on updating you about a lot more events happening around! Till then, don’t keep calm and stay Netflix-ed!
