Saint Laurent’s Epic New York City Fashion Show 2k18 Highlights

This June Saint Laurent brought their Fashion show ramps to the fashionable city of New York and here are the highlights of a glistening shindig that went down. This was the first show for designer Anthony Vaccarello for Yves Saint Laurent’s wardrobe and the designer was seen pairing the old with the new from the classic wardrobe of Saint Laurent.

Typical to every Saint Laurent show, the location was a snazzy one even this time, was hard to ignore by fashion fans. The creative director was seen to flood Instagram with his women’s wear show in February with a glitzy Eifel Tower backdrop, and this time for his first men’s wear show since having joined the reputable fashion everybody nods to, he has taken his audience to New York City.

He reportedly said to a journalist at the New York Fashion Week, backstage – “I thought it was nice, nothing is happening here anymore, everything is moving to Paris”.

The venue was New Jersey’s Liberty State Park, where the guests most of whom had flown in to attend the event sat on 14 feet high open tiered scaffolding, while the models chose to walk a marble wet looking catwalk all 59 of men and 10 women. The Liberty State Park is built on a landfill of tidal flats that jut out towards the picturesque Hudson River, the backdrop was a finely curated ad nauseam Manhattan skyline that still managed to play a stellar role in the stage setting.

The after party was held on a boat, as homage to the 1978 launch party to the release of the Opium Perfume by YSL. The party had caviar-laden snacks, Hawaiian orchids and the whole spread with his collection. This collection of men’s fashion wear as Vaccarello describes it is fit for “an urban macadam cowboy”. Backstage the director also confessed to being inspired by the legendary Yves Saint Laurent’s own wardrobe and this was a blend of town mouse meets a country mouse, old YSL meets new YSL. Thus, the show was populated with high waists, cropped jackets, fine shirts and tight black trousers in keeping with the founder’s epic wardrobe style. The shirts were more like blouses that had shots of gold, worn half buttoned in the stellar leopard print.

YSL’s love for Marrakech and his fashion inspiration was well portrayed through a selection of stylish denim hoodies, saharienne jackets that were belted, tangled necklaces finished with black grosgrain boating hats. The hats were almost like dark halos sitting atop the model’s crowns with the dark Manhattan skyline at the background.

The finale was the biggest splash with the take-home image being a male model who appeared topless, yet dressed with glistening silver spray all over their torso and dressed in what can be best described as tightly fitted ‘feminine’ sequin trousers. There were several finer details to the show that definitely made a noise, as did the black heavy ursine jacket that came towards the end of the show. Most footwear highlighted during the show were scuffed converse shoes or Cuban heels. Vaccarello is known to be rising in high fashion since the past decade and this show was truly a testament to his abstraction in the fashion world and an honest tribute to the founder of the brand Saint Laurent.
