Why body language might be the key to a successful lifestyle

The term Body-language is a bit intriguing. Does body also have its own language? Yes, it does. You don’t believe me? Read on.

Body language is the non-verbal component of communication and relates to the movement of hands, eyes, facial expressions and body posture. Our body sends out signals to others about how we feel about ourselves, them or about a topic in question so much that it is an integral part of communication skills. Management training includes a detailed lesson on Body Language and all corporates master this skill over a period of time. Statesmen, entrepreneurs and political leaders are often judged and their next moves and policies are predicted based on their body language.

Body language can be a very effective tool to reveal self-confidence. Now, we cannot just blow our own trumpet and tell people about our achievement or qualities or how efficient we are. It is through our body language that we can say a lot about ourselves without actually saying it.

You do not need a lesson, classes or to read an article to know this as this is nothing new to you. You practice it in your daily life, without even knowing it. Don’t you sometimes look away while someone is talking to convey that you are not interested in what they are saying? Or, when you avoid making an eye contact when you are lying or do not mean what you are saying. Shaking you legs when nervous, clearing your throat when unsure of your reply and many such things. Some other negative signs that depict a poor body language are:

• Folding arms in front of the body.

• Tense facial expression such as twitched forehead

• Expressionless face

• Body turned away

• Downcast Eyes, avoiding eye contact.

A man who has the right body language is sure to be successful in life. Positive attitude clubbed with crisp body language is a sure shot way to success. To validate my point, I would ask you to look at some of the most successful men. Have you observed, how they:

Shake hands: A firm handshake shows your warmth and willingness to have a conversation. It makes the other person believe that you mean business.

Eye contact: As is often said, look directly in the eyes of the speaker or listener.

• Smile often during a conversation and appear as if you are paying attention.

Talk with your hands: Make frequent hand movements while talking to attain the interest and attention of the listener. At the same time avoid speaking in a loud voice. The lower and more controlled your speech, the more authority you gain.

Use open body language: Legs and arms not crossed, fists not clenched, legs not tucked behind or under the chair, arms on the table are some of the signs of open body language.

Watch their feet: To gauge the other person’s emotional state or intent, watch for their leg and foot movement. While they may be consciously good at vexing their facial expressions and hand movements, it is the feet that can show the real picture. Fidgety feet which are constantly being shaken show anxiety and nervousness.

Thus, by using the right body language you can win conversations and people. Once that happens, success will surely kiss your feet.
