Highlights of the Grammy awards 2k18

The 2k18 Grammy Awards was expectedly yet another potpourri of emotional and political events, with Bruno Mars bagging more awards than predicted by the oddsmakers and some fiery performances by Kendrick Lamar, Kesha, Rihanna and others. With #MeToo and #TimesUp movements setting the tone for the award show evenings, the 60th annual Grammy Awards was no different. Thanks to yet another inflammatory tweet by the President just waiting to happen and the ongoing conversation about race and immigration along with the sliding in of Larry Nassar’s scandal, the Grammy awards still managed to rope in several beautiful moments and showcased Hollywood’s united viewpoint towards diversity and equality. Altogether the celebratory night was a banger with great performances by artists, cute little kids minus the Fire and Fury Hillary Clinton moments, because those couldn’t be caught on camera.

The opening performance by Kendrick Lamar further underlined the mood for the night as he rapped about black blood and black power with the U.S.A flag in the background, with fatigued men in ski masks. Towards the end of his performance he was joined in by two other notable artists U2 and Dave Chappelle. Dave perfectly summarised the performance by saying these touching words to the audience – “I just wanted to remind the audience that the only thing more frightening than watching a black man be honest in America is being an honest black man in America. Sorry for the interruption”.

Kesha’s legal battle that had the Hollywood tinsel town buzzing last year was one of the highlight stories and her victory ballad took a grand turn as she was joined in by other popular female artists like Camilla Cabello, Cyndi Lauper, Julia Michaels, Andra Day, the Resistance Revival Chorus and Bebe Rexha joining in with Kesha on stage, dressed in angelic white.

Before Kesha’s angelic performance of her victory ballad, Jane Monae had delivered a short and sweet speech announcing her support towards the #TimesUp campaign. She said – “Tonight, I am proud to stand in solidarity as not just an artist but a young woman with my fellow sisters in this room who make up the music industry,” she said. “…We are also daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, and human beings. We come in peace, but we mean business. And to those who would dare try and silence us, we offer you two words: Time’s up.”

The Grammy Awards also had cute kids being more mature than their parents as Blue Ivy, 6-year old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z stole the show when she asked her parents gently to stop embarrassing themselves with gauche political claps. If there is anyone who can cut down the Queen B and Jay-Z to size them up, then it is their daughter!

The show had a surprising cameo from Hillary Clinton who read from the Fire and Fury which was like celebrities reading mean tweets. Except in this case, it was the celebrities including Hillary Clinton who read from the mean tell-all excerpts about the current presidential administration and all the shenanigans storming the political climate.

The show also had a tear-jerking emotional performance from a group of superstars which was the most non-political and emotional performance of the night. The performance was a tribute to the 59 victims of Las Vegas shooting. A silent and contemplative crowd listened to a tender rendition of Eric Clapton’s ‘Tears in Heaven’ delivered by Maren Morris, Eric Church and the Brothers Osborne. Finally, the night concluded with Bruno Mars winning the Grammy for the record of the year, the album of the year and the song of the year for his single That’s what I like for the album 24K magic.
