Ondo Rep. Hon Joseph Akinlaja Formally Declares Open “Ondo City Facebook Hangout”

By Emmanuel Ajibulu

“Facebook and other Social Media platforms are the ‘new media’ that speed up conversations in a more interactive way that makes communication more effective and worthwhile. It is an online media that takes communication beyond the limitations of the traditional media, which most often delivers content but doesn’t permit readers, or as the case may be, viewers or listeners, to participate in the formation or development of the content. Unequivocally, I am proud to be part of this laudable initiative for the largest interests of our youths here in Ondo City.”

These were the assertions made by Hon Joseph Iranola Akinlaja on Sunday when he officially declared open the “Ondo City Facebook Hangout” organised by the youths in Ondo City, Ondo state.

Hon. Akinlaja is currently representing Ondo East and West Federal Constituency and also Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream. In his opening remarks after cutting the tape at the colourful event, he openly informed that:

“The youths remain the most prominent users of the social media as a whole not just facebook. This, of course, is not surprising as the digital age is widely believed to belong to the youth.

No doubt, the phenomenon of the social media has, in no small measure, impacted positively on the development of the Nigeria youth and, indeed, Nigerians at large. For one, it has made the youth to become better informed and educated by being constantly abreast of global news and information.”

Speaking further, the federal lawmaker stated that; “It has provided a platform for unemployed youth to either be gainfully employed or become aware of job opportunities across the world.

Aside this, the social media provides unlimited platform for genuine business transactions as it offers youth with business acumen the opportunity to promote their goods and services for a global market. Through this, many have been delivered from the shackles of abject poverty.”

Continuing he declared that; “Similarly, it has also enhanced career and professional efficiency of the youths. Now, otherwise complex and complicated assignments could be accomplished within very little time framework and with unbelievable accuracy. Additionally, the social media has also offered the youth with a medium through which they could scrutinize the activities of those that are in government in form of constructive criticisms. This also enhances research work by students and the general public alike.”

The Ondo born politician however advised the youths to explore the good side of the social media especially Facebook, he said. “I therefore urge our youths to look inwards by exploring all the positive sides of this platform and remain responsible and illustrious youths not just to Ondo State but to be the light of the world and eschew all social vices and defiant behaviours that could put them in bad light. You will remain useful to your parents, yourselves and to nations” Akinlaja said.
