My August 2023 Simply Earth box has arrived!
Simply Earth is a monthly subscription box that sends you a selection of Essential oils along with recipes for enjoying them. A peek inside!
An info card (printed on the back of one of the recipe cards) revealed August’s theme: “Candles”. It listed this month’s featured oils, along with any included extras. It also provided a few safety tips for each oil/blend.
A note from Katie — recipe formulator & certified aromatherapist — revealed a bit more about this month’s theme.
August’s recipes provided clear instructions for whipping up the following:

- Summer Nights Diffuser Blend
- Citrus Candle
A sheet of pre-printed stickers was also included for labeling your creations.
August’s oils included:

Simply Earth Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil
Every Simply Earth oil is printed with a Simply Pure Promise that ensures that the product has been quality tested and is 100% pure. Ingredients are also clearly printed on every label.
Grapefruit has been found to have many benefits including clearing blemished skin, rejuvenating dull hair, boosting your mood, and supporting mental focus. It’s also great for balancing food cravings. Plus, it smells really good.
Simply Earth Red Thyme Essential Oil

Simply Earth Camphor Essential Oil
Camphor is a particularly great essential oil for those who need help dealing with aches and pains in their joints. It’s also ideal for cleansing the skin, promoting circulation, soothing muscles, supporting respiration, and my favorite — deterring insects!
Simply Earth Bug Fighter Essential Oil Blend
Speaking of insects… “Bug Fighter” is August’s only blend and was designed to keep your home pest free (naturally!) and shield you from nature’s outdoor annoyances. It contains a nice aromatic combination of patchouli, cedarwood, and lemongrass essential oils.
Simply Earth DIY Candle Kit (x 2)
Two DIY candle kits were included for making the candle recipes featured in this month’s box. Each kit contained everything needed to make one 1-oz candle: All-natural soy wax, a cotton wick, and a wick sticker.
Wick Centering Tool
The wooden stick/tool above is used for keeping your wick perfectly centered in its vessel as the melted wax hardens around it.
Floating Wicks
One of the recipes was for a “wax-less” candle that called for floating wicks. These are used by placing them in a container with water and a layer of vegetable oil & essential oils. Then simply light the wicks. The flame will go out when the wick has burned through the oil.
Here are the recipes that I’ve made so far:
Citrus Candle
Supplies needed: 1 Candle Making Kit, Wick Centering Tool, Grapefruit Essential Oil, and a 1 oz jar.
First, I needed to open up the candle kit and remove the wick and wick sticker, which were packaged separately.
I then used the wick sticker to adhere the wick to the bottom of my jar. — I utilized small baby food jars that I got from my local Buy Nothing page!
Next, I needed to melt the wax right inside of the bag. — In order for it to stand upright, I placed it inside of a glass measuring cup.
I microwaved the wax in 30-second intervals until it was all completely melted.
After adding the required essential oils, I simply poured the mixture right into my awaiting jar and placed the wick centering tool on top.
After letting it harden for an hour or so, I placed the sticker on the side of the jar and my (very small) candle was ready to use!
Camp Out Candle
Supplies needed: 1 Candle Making Kit, Wick Centering Tool, Camphor Essential Oil, Grapefruit Essential Oil, and a 1 oz jar.
The second candle was made using the same process as the first… Open the kit, place the wick, and melt the wax.
Second candle, complete!
Bug Off Lotion Bar
Supplies needed: Almond Oil*, Beeswax*, Bug Fighter Essential Oil Blend, and a soap mold.

To begin, I needed to melt together the specified amount of almond oil and beeswax pellets. Again, I did this in 30-second increments until all of the wax was melted.
Once fully liquified, I added the essential oils and poured it into a silicone mold (from a previous Simply Earth box!).
After letting it harden for an hour or so, I popped it out of the mold and into a plastic bag with a label in the center so I won’t forget was it’s for.
Summer Nights Diffuser Blend
Supplies needed: Bug Fighter Essential Oil Blend, Grapefruit Essential Oil, and Thyme Essential Oil.
The easiest of all the recipes, it simply required me to fill my diffuser with water, then add the specified amount drops of each of the essential oils above. Once added, I switched on the diffuser and let the summery aroma fill the room.
Tiki Torch Roll-On Blend
Supplies needed: Bug Fighter Essential Oil Blend, Grapefruit Essential Oil, Camphor Essential Oil, fractionated coconut oil*, and a 10mL Roll-On Bottle*.

Another easy recipe that simply involved placing a specified amount of essential oils drops into the roll-on bottle and filling the rest up with fractionated coconut oil.
Then just replace the cap and carefully position the sticker/label & you’re done!
