The contents of the envelope! — The project I received for review was “String Lanterns“.
NOTE: **As a subscriber you would receive TWO different kits per shipment.**
A full color insert provided step-by-step instructions with helpful hints and photos to go along with each step.
Supplies included 3 small skeins of colored yarn, latex gloves, a tassel maker, 3 tealight holders, metallic gold string, an inflatable ball, and 3 battery-operated tealight candles.
The first step was to make the tassels. We started by measuring out the indicated lengths of yarn for each one.
We then wrapped the yarn around the provided plastic “tassel maker” about 20 times and tied it together at the top.
After carefully removing it from the tassel maker, we tied a separate piece about a half inch below the top, snipped the bottom ends, and our tassel was complete!
Next, it was time to create the lantern itself. We opted not to use the included inflatable ball and went with balloons instead. This way, we could do all 3 lanterns at once.
We started by pouring white school glue into three disposable containers, which we divided between us.
To make the lantern, we were to dip the yarn into the glue, wipe off the access, and carefully begin wrapping it around the balloon. The goal was to wrap as much as possible, filling in empty spaces as you went.
Once we were happy with the wrapping, we were to let the lanterns sit overnight to dry.
By the next day, the yarn had dried/hardened and it was time to pop the balloons!
The balloon made a neat “crackling” sound as it slowly deflated, pulling some of the dried glue along with it.
We carefully pulled the balloon through one of the openings and our lantern was ready!
All that was left to do was insert the tealight holder/candle (which we had already attached the tassel to). The instructions said to leave a large enough opening for this while wrapping the yarn, but we forgot (oops!). Thankfully, we were able to simply cut some of the strings at the bottom to make enough room to slide it in.
The last step was to use the gold string to tie to the top for hanging and the lantern was complete! 😀
My girls and I all had fun crafting this latest Annie’s Creative Girls Club project.
