Let’s see what’s in my “Taste of Thailand” Raddish Kids box!

Everything was shipped in a brown box with a big red radish printed on top.

A peek inside!

The kit opened up to reveal all of the printed materials in the “Taste of Thailand” box.

The first card detailed everything you’ll learn as you explore the culture and cuisine of Thailand including culinary skills, new recipes, activities, and more. The reverse side provided a full shopping list for each of the 3 recipes and an extra fruit carving activity.

One thing I really appreciate about Raddish Kids is that they provide ingredient recommendations for every Raddish recipe to accommodate vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, egg-free and dairy-free diets. When your kit ships, you’ll receive an email with links to grocery lists, bonus recipes, dietary modifications (as shown above for the Pad Thai recipe), and more.

Every box comes with a new culinary tool which is used in at least one of the featured recipes. The Taste of Thailand box came with a little whisk with soft silicone loops, as opposed to the standard metal wire ones.

Every box also includes a different iron-on patch that goes along with the particular theme. When you subscribe to a 6- or 12-month plan, you’ll receive a free Raddish Kids apron to display your collection of patches!

To encourage dinnertime conversation with your family, you’ll also receive a set of “Table Talk” cards that relate to theme. The cards are plastic and can be easily popped out & hung on a keyring to keep them all together.

The 3 included recipes for “Taste of Thailand” were:

  • Chicken Satay Skewers
  • Pad Thai Noodles
  • Mango Sticky Rice

The recipes were all laminated and illustrated with easy to follow step-by-step instructions.

The back of each recipe booklet featured a different culinary skill with instructions and tips on performing them properly and safely.

The Mango Sticky Rice didn’t require any dietary modifications and the ingredients list was short, so that’s the recipe I went with for this review.

First, I gathered all of the ingredients that I had bought beforehand. The email I received prior to the box shipping included the full list of everything I would need, which was very helpful for planning ahead. (Is it obvious where we shop for our groceries? Ha!)

The first step was to cook the rice, which took all of 90 seconds since I couldn’t find any actual sushi rice that was required, so I had to settle for microwavable basmati rice. During a pandemic we kinda have to work with what’s available. 😉

Next, we poured the coconut milk, sugar, and salt into a pot and let it cook for 3 minutes once it started to boil.

We then ladled (with an ice cream scoop — don’t judge! 😉 ) half of the coconut milk mixture into the bowl of cooked rice. After covering the rice, we had to let it sit for at least 10 minutes to let it absorb the milk.

While we waited, we practiced the traditional Thai greeting, which we all agreed looked like something that’s done in Animal Crossing when wishing on a star (that game totally saved our sanity during quarantine!).

Mango time! Confession: I’ve never bought/cut a fresh mango in my life. This was definitely a learning experience for all of us!

After cutting around the pit as best as I could, I had the kiddos score the slices with a butter knife. — Okay, it was a cheese knife. The dishwasher was full, so again we worked with what was available. 🙂

Once scored, the flesh was scooped out with a spoon and plopped into a bowl.

When both mangoes were successfully cut up, we poured the cubes onto the coconut milk-absorbed rice.

We drizzled the remaining coconut milk mixture on top and it was all done!

After letting it chill overnight, I scooped some into a bowl and dug in. My girls, on the other hand, have a bizarre aversion to rice and would only try the mango. Thankfully, that part was a total win. 🙂

Along with the 3 main recipes, there was also a cute fruit carving activity that we’re saving to do another day. After tackling those mangoes, I wasn’t feeling too great about my carving skills. 😉

At the end of the day, the secret message found on the back of the kit provided an accurate description of our first Raddish Kids experience. 😀

Although my kids are some of the pickiest eaters ever, they do enjoy helping out in the kitchen. Raddish Kids gave us the perfect opportunity to not only try out a new recipe, but learn about a different culture while we flexed our (rather weak) culinary muscles. I found the step-by-step instructions to be totally straightforward and easy for kids to follow along with. I mentioned it before, but I love how they send you a grocery list before the box arrives and even include alternative ingredients based on any dietary restrictions you may have. So helpful! 🙂 — Remember for a limited time, you can save $15 on any 6-month subscription with coupon code “ATHOME“! You’ll receive a free apron too!
