Let’s see what’s in the September/October 2017 The Hippie Hobby box!

The box!

A peek inside.

The featured project for September/October was a DIY Jewelry Dish. Complete step-by-step instructions were provided, along with helpful tips and photos.

Sculpey Oven-Bake Clay

The base material for the jewelry dish was white Sculpey oven-bake clay. A 2-ounce package was provided.

Super Glue, Washi Tape, Earring Posts/Backs, Plastic Animal Figurine

Super glue was to be used for attaching a clay sculpture or figure (the rhino shown above) to the center of your completed dish. Earring posts/backs were provided for making clay earrings. I honestly have no clue what the washi tape was included for…

Acrylic Paint, Paint Brush, Paint Palette

The items above were to be used for painting your final product(s).

Bracelet Bonus Craft

Materials for a bonus craft included 2 silver chains, a charm, connector bead, lobster clasp, and jump ring. I wasn’t 100% sure how to put this together and I didn’t have the proper tools anyway, so I skipped this project.

Onto the dish(es)!

Instead of doing a single large ring dish (and earrings), I opted to make two smaller dishes. I started by cutting the clay down the middle into 2 separate pieces.

Next, I rolled each slab into a round ball.

I then used a glass bottle of apple cider vinegar to roll out the clay to roughly 1/4″ thickness and cut out even circles using a glass candle holder. — I’m all about improvising.

After a bit of Googling, I found a Martha Steward ring dish DIY that used temporary tattoos and figured that would be a fun way to decorate mine too. Plus, my girls just so happen to have about 39314 temporary tattoos laying around so I knew I’d have a nice selection to choose from. Hello Kitty was an easy winner.

I applied the tattoos to the dishes the same way you’d apply them to your skin, then I popped ’em in the oven at 275 degrees for 15 minutes.

I think I screwed something up with one of the tattoos, because the sitting kitty didn’t stick very well once it baked and started peeling off. Once I added some simple finishing touches with a sharpie, I slathered on a couple layers of Mod Podge to hopefully keep the kitties in tact.

This tattoo “crackled” a bit in the oven, which was odd since it was the one below that I think I goofed up on (forgot to remove the plastic?).

As you can see, my dishes ended up looking more like plates, but I’m still pretty pleased with how they turned out. Yeah, they’re not perfect, but they’re certainly good enough to put on my night table.

While I decided to go my own way with this month’s project, I think that’s what I really enjoy about The Hippie Hobby box. They provide the project/materials, but it’s ultimately up to me what I end up doing with them. Sure, I could have spent a few dollars on some clay and did the project on my own, but would I have even thought to make myself some DIY ring dishes? Nope! This box forces me out of my comfort zone and encourages me to be creative, which is pretty dang awesome.  —  Remember, if you’d like to subscribe you can save $7 on your first box (making it just $16.95) when you use coupon code “ROSEBUD7” at checkout!
