# Holi is also known as the festival of colours where everyone shares joy, happiness and love.

# Holi has its origin in India being a spring festival.

# It is a national festival in India and people from all the states celebrate it.

# It is celebrated after the full moon in the month of ‘Phalguna’ which generally falls between February and March.

# Holi is also celebrated in Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Pakistan, and the Philippines.

# The first day is known as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi and the second as Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti, Dhulandi or Dhulivandan.

# It is also now gaining popularity in North America and Europe.

# It’s only Hindu festival where equal importance is given to celebration by singing, dancing and partying other than praying even though it has a religious facade.

# Holi is known for water fights. Coloured water is filled with water balloons and water guns and sprayed on people along with dry powdered colour.

# There is a popular saying in Holi i.e. ‘Bura na mano Holi hai’ which means “don’t mind, its Holi.”

# Holi is associated with the love between lord Krishna and the love of his life Radha. As legend says young Krishna complained to his mother Yashoda about his dark complexion and that Radha was so fair. Yashoda told Krishna, he can colour her in any colour he wants and her complexion will change. Krishna followers all around the world celebrate Holi with zest and zeal.

# In Mathura and Vrindavan a different type of Holi is played known as ‘Lathdar hHoli’, in which women and men dress in traditional costumes and play Holi with the stick and a shield. Women try to touch men with sticks and men have to protect themselves with the shield.

# A very special Holi is also celebrated in some areas which are played with the petals of flowers. People allergic to colours can also play Holi with these petals.

# Before smearing colours on one another people usually put a vertical line on each other’s forehead known as ‘Tilak’.

# Indian Holi is very similar to Spanish festival “La Tomatina” with the only difference of colours replacing the ripe tomatoes.
