India’s Republic Day Facts That Every Indian Must Know

Every Indian heart fills with pride when we see unfurling of the National Flag on Republic Day. India is a great country famous for “Unity in Diversity” where people of more than one religions living together with complete understanding, patience and brotherhood. So, here are some Republic Day Facts that every Indian must be aware of:

1. January 26, 1930 was earlier celebrated as India’s Independence Day or Purna Swaraj Day. It’s the day India decided to fight for complete freedom.

2. The first Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 1950, three years after we got independence.

3. The Constitution of India is the longest written Constitution all over the world (which cannot be read in a single day); it has incorporated “448 Articles in 22 Parts, 12 Schedules and 97 Amendments” and written in two language Hindi and English.

4. Indian Constitution is written by the Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. He is known as the father of Indian Constitution. Drafting the Constitution was a difficult task. Dr B.R. Ambedkar took 2 years and 11 months to draft the Indian Constitution.

5. Before the Constitution came into force, India followed British Government’s Government of India Act 1935.

6. The first Republic Day Parade at Rajpath was held in 1955.

7. A Christian song, Abide With Me, is played at the Republic Day Parade. It is believed to be one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite songs.

8. The Prime Minister places a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti as a mark of respect to the thousands of Indian soldiers who had died fighting for the Independence.

9. The 21 gun salute is the firing of arms and canons as a naval and military mark of honour. The salute is given while the President of India unfurls the National flag.

10. A majority of National Awards such as Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan and Kirti Chakra are awarded during the Republic Day ceremony.

11. Republic Day Celebrations are a 3-day long affair. The celebrations end on January 29 with the ‘Beating Retreat’ ceremony.

12.On 26th of January in 1965 Hindi language was declared as our National language of India.
