Jimy Williams Obituary: Former Blue Jays manager Jimy Williams Passes away at age 80. Williams played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Houston Astros throughout the course of his 12 years in the game.

During his five years as manager, the Red Sox had a.540 winning percentage, but his best run came in Boston. They won 94 games in 1999, their most since 1986, and he was named the American League Manager of the Year.

Williams was the Atlanta Braves’ third base coach in between jobs in Toronto and Boston. In the seventh game of the 1992 National League Championship Series, he was the one waving Sid Bream home. In 1995, he was awarded a ring by the same franchise.

Williams also indirectly contributed to laying the groundwork for Atlanta’s successful run in the 1990s and the first part of the 2000s. He was one of the staff members who watched Chipper Jones in preparation for the MLB draft in 1990. Many were urging the Braves to select Todd Van Poppel, a high school pitcher, at that time.

Van Poppel’s career was unremarkable, whereas Jones went on to become a Hall of Fame player and one of the all-time great switch-hitters.

In 2008, Williams won a second World Series ring while serving as the Philadelphia Phillies’ bench coach.

In April 1966, he made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the St. Louis Cardinals, before going into coaching. He only made 14 appearances in all before retiring due to ongoing shoulder problems.
