Harry Porterfield Obituary-Death News; Longtime Host Of WLS-TV, Harry Porterfield Passes Away At Age 95

Following a brief illness, 95-year-old WLS-TV host Harry Porterfield passed away. After a brief illness, he was declared dead early on Monday morning, October 23, 2023.

On August 29, 1928, Harry Porterfield Jr. was born in the Michigan city of Saginaw. He worked there at first in the broadcasting department. Porterfield spent the first 21 years of his broadcasting career with WBBM in Chicago before switching to WLS-TV in 1985.

Prior to joining WBBM again in 2009, he worked for WLS-TV for 24 years. His 87-year career came to an end in 2015 when he made the decision to retire.

After a 55-year marriage, Harry Porterfield left behind a wife, four children, a granddaughter, and a great-grandchild. The multi-decade piece “Someone You Should Know,” in the eyes of his family, is just one of his many accomplishments as a writer in the Midwest of the United States.

The fact that Porterfield shared the intimate tales of thousands of Chicagoans solidified his enormous influence both inside and outside of the city. He was the weekend newscast’s anchor on Saturdays, even though there weren’t enough resources or breaking news throughout his tenure at WBBM. Porterfield claimed that he departed WBBM voluntarily, even though it was widely believed that his termination was due to a valid reason.

All over the country, people heard the cry for help. Porterfield graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He subsequently graduated from DePaul University with a law degree.

Porterfield was a kind and devoted father and husband to his family. His fifty-five-year-old wife confirmed that he valued telling stories to others greatly. Following his passing, friends and family have received condolences.
