Born on January 27, 1929, Mohamed Al-Fayed passed away on August 30, 2023. He was an Egyptian businessman who operated primarily out of London starting in the middle of the 1960s. His business assets included the Hôtel Ritz in Paris, the Fulham Football Club, and the Harrods department store in London. With an estimated $2 billion in wealth at the time of his death in 2023, Fayed was the 1,493rd richest person in the world. Fayed was married to Samira Khashoggi from 1953 to 1956; the couple had a son named Dodi.

When Dodi and Diana, Princess of Wales, tragically died in a car accident in Paris in 1997, they were engaged. Fayed had four children during his 1985 union with Finnish socialite and former model Heini Wathén: Jasmine, Karim, Camilla, and Omar.

Al-Fayed paid £6.25 million to buy the west London professional football team Fulham F.C. in 1997.Bill Muddyman owns the Muddyman Group, which made the purchase. By the end of the fifth year, he wanted to get Fulham into the Premier League. With 101 points and 90 goals scored, Fulham won the First Division (now Football League Championship) in 2001 under manager Jean Tigana. Al-Fayed thus achieved his objective of playing in the Premier League a year earlier than anticipated.

By 2002, when Fulham started competing at the European level, they had won the Intertoto Cup and posed a danger in the UEFA Cup. Fulham made it to the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League final while under Al–Fayed’s ownership, which ran from 2009–2013. Fulham also managed to stay in the Premier League.

Fulham had to vacate Craven Cottage while it underwent renovations to meet modern safety standards. There were fears that the club wouldn’t visit the Cottage again after it was revealed that Al-Fayed had given a real estate development company the first right to build on the land. In a 2004 legal case launched against him by Fulham owner Al-Fayed, who had erroneously claimed that Tigana had overpaid by more than £7 million for new players and had secretly negotiated movements, Tigana was declared not guilty of any misconduct.

Al-Fayed declared his support for a salary ceiling for football players in 2009 and blasted the FA and Premier League for being “run by donkeys who don’t understand business and who are dazzled by money.” Al-Fayed erected Michael Jackson’s statue at Craven Cottage in April 2011.

In 1999, Jackson made a previous trip to the venue for a league matchup against Wigan Athletic. Al-Fayed reportedly responded to criticism of the statue by saying, “If some stupid fans don’t understand and appreciate such a gift this guy gave to the world, they can go to hell.” I sincerely hope they don’t start following them. Al-Fayed asserted that the removal of the statue by the new owners in 2013 brought the club’s relegation from the Premier League as a result of ‘bad luck’. Thanks to Al-Fayed’s generosity, the statue is presently housed at the National Football Museum.
