ChatGPT for Copywriting: My Workflow (21+ Mega-Prompts)

Ever felt like you’re throwing words into a void?

Crafting Copy that sticks, resonates, and prompts action—sounds like a dream?

What if the key to unlocking this enigma was not just in your creativity but in technology you’ve yet to fully embrace?

Enter AI.

AI is reshaping the landscape right before our eyes!

In this blog post, you will learn the complete AI cooperation workflow.

Additionally, I will provide you with various AI prompts so that you can put them to immediate use.

Why AI changes copywriting?

In the realm of copywriting, the introduction of AI is nothing short of revolutionary.

Traditionally, crafting compelling content has been an expensive endeavor.

Why?

Because the stakes are high.

We are talking about $5,000 – $10,000 for a landing page copy here (from an experienced copywriter)!

Each piece of copy is a gamble, a hypothesis testing whether your message will click with your Audience or fall flat.

To increase your chances of success, you need variety and volume in your conversion messaging.

Enter AI, and the game changes. Suddenly, the barriers to creating diverse and abundant copy are broken.

With AI, you can churn out numerous variations of your message at an unprecedented pace, allowing you to test multiple hypotheses simultaneously. This rapid testing leads to quicker insights into what resonates with your audience, enabling you to refine your strategy with precision.

In fact, according to a case study published on Reddit, AI helped people lower their CPR by 28%.

But the real magic of AI in copywriting lies in its ability to save two of your most valuable resources: time and money.

By accelerating the creation process and slashing the costs associated with producing a variety of copy, AI not only makes it feasible to experiment with your messaging on a grand scale but also empowers you to discover that perfect product-market fit with a speed and efficiency that were unimaginable before.

If you are still skeptical about AI and hesitant to use it due to fears of job loss, it is important to know that 52% of business leaders are already using AI, and 64.7% have plans to incorporate such tools in the future.

Good and bad with ChatGPT for copywriting

While there are several AI content writing tools available, such as Jasper, Copy AI, etc.

My preferred tool is Chatgpt.

I believe that adopting a conversational approach in copywriting is crucial. Treating AI as an employee and ensuring a consistent flow of narrative is essential.

Understanding the strengths and limitations of tools like ChatGPT is crucial for leveraging their potential while navigating their pitfalls.

Here you go:

What AI is good at?

  • Human-like content generation: ChatGPT shines in its ability to produce content that closely mimics human writing as a large language model. Thanks to its training on vast datasets encompassing a wide array of online content and its natural language processing abilities, it enables it to generate varied and engaging copies with ease.
  • Connecting ideas: Its proficiency in drawing connections between different ideas and entities allows for the creation of intriguing analogies and cohesive narratives, making the content more relatable and engaging for the reader.
  • Pattern recognition: ChatGPT excels at recognizing patterns within data, which is invaluable for brainstorming and structuring content. It can effortlessly generate dozens of headlines or content variations, significantly reducing the time and effort required for these tasks.
  • Structuring content: The AI’s understanding of patterns also aids in creating well-structured and intuitive copy. By following established copywriting frameworks, it ensures that the content is easy for the target audience to digest.

What AI is not good at?

  • Understanding marketing objectives: AI lacks the capability to fully comprehend the nuances of marketing objectives, which means it might not always produce content that effectively resonates with the intended audience on an emotional level. However, there’s a solution for this, which I’m gonna discuss.
  • Evidence-based content: ChatGPT struggles with conducting independent research, verifying sources, and presenting diverse perspectives. This limitation hinders its ability to produce content that is both informative and reliable.
  • Bias: The inherent biases in AI, stemming from its training data and the societal biases it reflects, pose a challenge in ensuring fair and unbiased content. These biases can inadvertently influence the tone and perspective of the generated copy. Many experts believe that for any form of intelligence, and also AI generated content bias is inevitable.
  • Generating complete copies: While ChatGPT can produce sections of content effectively, attempting to create an entire piece in one go often results in generic and superficial output. For more detailed and nuanced writing, it’s better to generate content one section at a time.

Setting the right expectations

You need to recognize that AI, including ChatGPT or any other powerful tools, is not a complete replacement but an enhancement of your capabilities. It’s crucial to set the right expectations.

While it can significantly reduce the time spent on research and initial drafting, you must remember that AI cannot fully replicate the human touch.

By integrating AI into your workflow, according to my experience you can save up to 80% of your time in the writing process.

However, the remaining 20%—which involves critical thinking, additional research, and personalized input—is what will truly elevate your content from good to great.

In a world where mediocrity is no longer allowed to fly, you need to invest the extra effort to set your content apart and ensure its value and relevance in the eyes of your audience.

Remember that AI cannot replace your creative craft. To truly make the most of it, you still need to be an experienced copywriter.

Training AI about your audience and products

If you try to generate a copy using ChatGPT without training it specifically for your audience and offer, the product-market fit in terms of languages and messaging might be generic.

By default, AI tools such as ChatGPT don’t come pre-loaded with knowledge about your specific audience or the intricate details of your products.

You have the best understanding of the audience you are targeting, so you need to provide relevant contextual data to ensure the generation of high-quality copies.

So how to do it?

You need to ask it, to help you.

Here’s a handy prompt to kick things off:

"I want to generate a [COPY TYPE] for my product called [PRODUCT]. Before we begin, I need you to fully understand my business and the target audience I'm targeting. Please ask me at least 10 exploratory questions about my business and target audience or anything else you need to help me create the most persuasive copy."

If you’re well-versed in your products and audience, answering these questions will be a breeze.

But what if you’re charting unknown territories, perhaps working with a new client?

Enter Perplexity AI, a cutting-edge, evidence-based search engine.

Simply type in queries related to your audience’s challenges by setting the “Focus” as Reddit.

Perplexity will fetch a comprehensive overview of their struggles, drawing from the wealth of user discussions and feedback on Reddit.

Moreover, leveraging tools like Perplexity allows you to enrich ChatGPT’s understanding with real-world data, ensuring the copy it generates is grounded in the actual needs and preferences of your audience.

Of course, tapping into your own CRM or directly consulting with your client for insights remains invaluable. By amalgamating these resources, ChatGPT can become an incredibly efficient tool in your copywriting arsenal.

However, there’s a catch.

Each chat session with ChatGPT starts from scratch, often requiring you to repeat the same background information.

To circumvent this repetitive cycle, consider creating a custom GPT bot pre-trained with all pertinent details about your business, target audience, and the types of copy you aim to produce.

By uploading files or data for the AI to reference, you ensure a personalized and consistent foundation for all your copywriting needs.

Like:

  • Business overview document
  • Course details document
  • Target audience profile
  • Market needs and challenges
  • Competitive analysis
  • And much more

This way, your custom GPT bot becomes a dedicated copywriting assistant, intimately familiar with your brand and ready to generate compelling copy at any time.

By investing time upfront to train your AI tool thoroughly, you’re setting the stage for content that not only engages and persuades but also deeply connects with your audience, reflecting their needs, desires, and challenges in every line.

The process of writing the copy

Attempting to create long-form content, such as a complete blog post or a detailed product description, in a single go often results in subpar quality.

The key to avoiding this pitfall lies in understanding the best practices for working with AI especially in long-form content creation.

When tasked with generating lengthy content, AI models like ChatGPT can sometimes produce work that lacks depth and nuance.

This is due to a limitation related to the model’s capacity for generating contextually rich and detailed content over extended text due to “contextual degradation” or “diminishing returns on coherence” as the content lengthens without a focused approach.

The most effective way to harness the power of ChatGPT for writing is to approach the task one section at a time. This method ensures that each part of your content receives the attention it deserves, with a focus on quality and relevance.

Here’s a simplified version of a prompt (that I use) that might be used for this purpose:

"I have an outline for a blog post on [BLOG POST TOPIC] that I’m working on. Please help me expand on one of the sections. Here’s the outline: [INSERT OUTLINE]. Let's start with the section titled [INSERT SECTION TITLE]. Please feel free to ask me any exploratory questions to better understand the topic and incorporate my insights."

This approach not only allows for deeper exploration of each topic but also enables a collaborative effort between you and the AI.

As the AI generates content for a specific section, it may pose questions that prompt you to provide additional information or personal insights. This interaction enhances the quality of the content, ensuring it is both informative and reflective of your unique perspective.

Think of writing with ChatGPT as a dance where both partners lead and follow at different times. You provide the direction with your outline and insights, and the AI follows by generating content based on your guidance.

Then, as the AI requests more information, it takes the lead, and you follow by supplying the necessary details.

This back-and-forth ensures that the final content is a product of both the AI’s capabilities and your expert knowledge.

Copy editing with ChatGPT

After the initial draft of your blog post is complete, the next crucial step is copy editing. This phase is about refining your draft to ensure clarity, coherence, and correctness while also aligning it with the desired tone of voice.

ChatGPT can be an invaluable tool in this stage, offering a range of capabilities to enhance the quality of your content.

Copy editing with ChatGPT involves several key actions: clarity checks, readability improvement (aim for below 10th grade), verification of claims, and tone adjustments.

Grammar? It’s perfect.

To utilize ChatGPT effectively for these tasks, you can use a prompt that encompasses all these needs. Here’s an example:

"I have completed a draft of my blog post and I would appreciate your help in editing it. Please read the entire post and identify any areas where clarity could be improved. Please also highlight sections that could benefit from enhanced readability. Additionally, please point out any claims that need to be supported with research or statistics, and identify any inconsistencies in tone of voice.”

When asking ChatGPT to verify claims or enhance the factual basis of your post, it’s crucial to leverage its web browsing feature for the latest statistics or studies that can back up your arguments.

This ensures that your content is not only persuasive but also credible.

However, when attempting to edit your copy using ChatGPT, you may quickly realize the limitation that ChartGPT does not include a long-form content editor. In such cases, you can copy and paste your content section by section into a word processor that offers inline AI content editing capabilities, such as Google Docs with Generative AI, Jasper, or even Notion AI.

Notion AI’s inline editing features

Personally, I use Notion AI for editing my content. For instance, in the screenshot above, you can see that I have copied and pasted the entire blog post you are currently reading, and I can utilize Notion AI’s inline content editing capabilities to make specific adjustments related to tone of voice, clarity, and more.
