What I like about Jasper AI vs. ChatGPT?

Here’s a quick list of things I like about Jasper AI in comparison with ChatGPT:

  • Instant image creation: Jasper Art, thanks to DALL-E integration, enables you to create high-quality images right within the document editor. With ChatGPT, you may need to use an external tool or any of their image generation plugins.
  • AI that mirrors your voice: Jasper AI's Brand Voice is designed to reflect your brand's tone and style, maintaining consistency in your content. It does so by analyzing your previously published content! On the other hand, ChatGPT needs some extra lines of prompting or the use of Custom Instructions.
  • Live-data-infused content: With Google Search integration, Jasper Chat allows your AI to access the web for real-time data. ChatGPT introduced the Browse feature in partnership with Bing, but that didn’t play out well. To the point that they had to disable it indefinitely. Currently, the only way to get access to real-time data on ChatGPT is via third-party plugins like WebChatGPT.
  • Templated content generation: Jasper AI provides 70+ ready-to-use templates for different content types, which is something ChatGPT lacks.
  • Customized workflow: Jasper AI's Workflows design processes for different tasks such as Ads or Social Media Campaigns. This pre-built workflow feature is not available in ChatGPT.
  • Seamless integrations: Jasper AI integrates with SurferSEO, Copyscape and Grammarly, making it quite powerful for SEO use cases. ChatGPT is yet to catch up on this front (although you can consider using their SEO plugins).
  • Organized content management: With Jasper AI's Campaigns, you can segment and organize projects efficiently. With ChatGPT, you just have “Chat History”, nothing much.

What I like about ChatGPT vs. Jasper AI?

  • Choice of models: Unlike Jasper AI, ChatGPT allows you to choose from different GPT models, giving you control over your tool. However, if you’re not a techie and want the app to choose the most optimal model for you dynamically based on your inputs, Jasper wins here.
  • Flexibility in output: The Playground feature of ChatGPT acts as a sandbox where you can adjust parameters and manipulate the AI output, providing room for creativity.
  • Customization via plugins: ChatGPT supports third-party plugins (such as browser plugins), allowing superior customization, integration with other tools, and overall enhancing your writing and SEO workflows.
  • Budget-friendly: ChatGPT is more affordable than Jasper AI at $20 per month with no upsells and no hidden fees.

What is ChatGPT?

Meet ChatGPT (by OpenAI), one of the most popular conversational AI tools today. It's like having a virtual assistant chatbot ready to assist you with penning down emails, whipping up full-length articles, solving complex coding problems and more!

All thanks to the magic of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, the large language models (LLMs) from OpenAI.

But, it isn't perfect – it struggles a bit with context, might mix up the facts and, well, anything post-September 2021? It's in the dark.

What is Jasper AI?

Let's move on to Jasper AI (read my complete review). It was initially called Conversion AI, later renamed to Jarvis. Then Disney chased them for trademark infringement (I saw it coming), and it’s now Jasper.

They certainly went through an identity crisis!

Anyway, where this AI shines is in the marketing content game (its model is fine-tuned for copywriting). It's got your blog post needs covered, copywriting, email marketing campaigns, you name it.

Along with the long-form editor (with the ability to supply inline commands), it packs a punch with 71 templates & 10 workflows and even pulls in DALL-E for image generation.

It also has Jasper Chat, which can be considered as a partial alternative to ChatGPT. It integrates with Google Search API for real time data as well. Although it's not the best for natural conversational workflows, Jasper could be your new best friend if you're looking for powerful copywriting tools.

Jasper AI vs. ChatGPT – Key differences

Let's delve into the main distinctions between these AI tools:

1. The tech

Both Jasper and ChatGPT leverage the power of GPT-3 / GPT-4 models. However, their approaches differ significantly.

Jasper simplifies the process for users by automatically selecting the best GPT model based on the requirements dynamically.

Also, Jasper’s AI model is fine-tuned to perform well when it comes to copywriting and writing long-form copies (with its advanced inline controls). It has a bias towards creating content that’s conversion-friendly.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, provides more flexibility to choose between their AI models. It offers GPT-3.5 to all users and upgrades to GPT-4 for premium users.

However, ChatGPT has a usage cap for GPT-4 – 50 messages every 3 hours – since they are optimizing the model to use resources efficiently. According to their latest (20 July) update (limit lowered from 25 to 50 messages/3 hours), OpenAI claims to reduce this limit significantly in the future.

2. Workflow

Workflow-wise, Jasper thrives on templates. Whether it’s an informational blog post or an enticing ad copy, Jasper provides designated templates and workflows.

The process is simple: Choose a template or workflow that aligns with your task, fill in the required information, and hit generate.

The platform will do the rest for you.

You don’t need to worry about long detailed prompts (like in the case of ChatGPT). The recipes are already ready for you.

To give you a better grasp, here's a snapshot of generating a full-length article using Jasper AI's Blog Post workflow:

Once it generates the blog post (one section at a time), you can edit the whole article in their long-form content editor.

You can use handy keyboard shortcuts aka Jasper Shortcuts to guide Jasper along. Here’s a handy list:

  • Ctrl/Cmd + J: Prompt Jasper to write.
  • Command + Enter: Run a command (without keeping the command).
  • Command + /: Re-run a command.
  • Command + Shift + Enter: Run a command (while keeping the command).

On the other hand, ChatGPT is very straightforward, relying heavily on the user's commands. This might seem appealing to prompt pros, but daunting to those who prefer a more streamlined and structured process.

Let's take a look at a few snapshots demonstrating the process of generating a full-length article on ChatGPT:

3. Team collaboration

Jasper AI is designed with team dynamics in mind. Their Teams plan includes up to three seats, a plus for large corporations or agencies. If you need to expand further, they offer the option to add two more team members for $62/mo (monthly plan) or $49/mo (annual subscription).

Currently, ChatGPT does not provide team support, even with their ChatGPT Plus membership. Larger organizations may miss out on collaboration features.

4. Output quality

It is fairly easy to produce high-quality outputs with ChatGPT-4 (provided you spend time crafting high quality prompts). However, maintaining a consistent tone and writing style can be a challenge for brands (but it’s possible with Custom Instructions).

Despite its laurels, Jasper AI falls short when compared to the quality of output provided by ChatGPT. The freedom ChatGPT gives when it comes to choosing between models and plugin support gives an edge to AI prompting pros.

Also, Jasper has a character look-back limit of up to 3000 characters. This means that when you're writing your content, it can only read the 3000 “characters” above the cursor (vs. 3000 words with ChatGPT) making it blind to any content above that point in the article. If you're working on a long copy in the long-form editor, this can cause it to consistently lose the narrative.

For instance, I've experienced situations where it fails to completely summarize the article at the end when I'm writing the conclusion section.

Nevertheless, Jasper's more hands-off approach might appeal to those not keen on grappling with AI prompts and copywriting nuances. Plus, their Brand Voice feature adds value to brands looking for an AI-writing solution that can mirror their writing style and tone.

To be transparent, there was a single instance over my two-year usage of Jasper when 30% of an AI-generated piece was flagged for plagiarism. The unpredictability of AI can be startling sometimes.

Jasper AI vs. ChatGPT: Pricing

For $20 per month, ChatGPT is ideal for bootstrapping solopreneurs. Jasper AI is steeper at $49 and $125 per month, but it offers a 20% yearly discount.

Is the extra cost worth it? Jasper AI’s custom workflows and templates might justify the extra spend for time-conscious large organizations. However, for small businesses and individual entrepreneurs, the value proposition becomes less clear.

And what if you chose to operate without Jasper AI altogether?

It's certainly possible using ChatGPT with Google Docs (by the side).

However, efficacy with ChatGPT depends on the specifics of your business and also how eager you are to craft strategic prompts that get the results you want.

You need to ask yourself, “Whether you want a tool that disciplines you to use it in a certain way with copywriting templates and fill-in-the-bank workflows, or are you ready to spend time creating your prompt library (may require hiring a prompt engineer or getting products like this one) to get the most out of ChatGPT.”

Jasper AI vs ChatGPT: Winner?

So, who reigns supreme: Jasper AI or ChatGPT? Clearly, ChatGPT is the winner “for me”.

[My workflow: First, I create content in ChatGPT with my mega-prompt, ask it to expand the detailed outline I provide it one section at a time, and assemble its outputs in Notion or Google Docs to run inline AI commands.]

But the answer isn't one-size-fits-all. It's about matching the right AI to your unique needs.

For professionals such as copywriters and digital marketers (who want a solution that works right off the bat), Jasper AI could be the weapon of choice, thanks to its integrated SEO features, workflows, and templates that boost your marketing efforts.

Moreover, as Jasper is already fine-tuned for copywriting needs, you don’t need meticulously crafted mega-prompts to get high-quality responses.

Also, If you're part of a large team, Jasper AI’s team management and project organization capabilities are useful.

However, ChatGPT's ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility will likely prove attractive. This is for those who need to get the job done on a tight budget and are well-versed with prompt design skills and disciplined with their workflows.

In terms of quality, ChatGPT impresses with its exclusive access to GPT-4 for premium users, whereas Jasper AI is more suited for inline controls and long-form content. Furthermore, OpenAI features will be rolled out to ChatGPT first, which may give you an advantage over your competitors in some industries.

Ultimately, your choice between Jasper AI and ChatGPT should hinge on your specific use case, budget, and how the strengths of each AI align with your needs. The decision rests in your hands.
