Dear Meghan Trainor...

Yesterday saw the release of Meghan Trainor's third single Dear Future Husband off her début album Title:.

I love the blues/jazz/doo-wop feel in Meghan's songs and presumed that they would be a guilty pop pleasure of mine for years to come. Even when I first Heard the tune for Dear Future Husband I thought 'Yes, this is such a great catchy tune'. That, of course was was until I heard the lyrics, and for the lucky ones that haven't heard it already, why don't you give it a listen?

This hideously catchy song manages to be extremely offensive to both men and women, whilst getting stuck in your head for hours on end.

I thought the best way for me to show you how truly insulting the lyrics was for me to break them down for you, alongside my initial reaction...

- "I'll be the perfect wife. Buying groceries"
... Because that is all us women can do when we are wives right? Going to the shops to buy the things that we will then cook in the kitchen.

- "So don't be thinking I'll be home and baking apple pies. I never learned to cook. But I can write a hook"
Ah yeah, maybe finally some real girl power?

- "If you wanna get that special lovin'. Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night"
WRONG! Let's just give people the Idea that as long as they Compliment us, they can Sleep with us.

- "After every fight, Just apologize, And maybe then I'll let you try and rock my body right"
AND lets give people the idea that we might sleep with them if they let us win in an argument, that is all that men want right?

- "Even if I was wrong, You know I'm never wrong, Why disagree? Why, why disagree?"
Let's not let our partner have their opinion, THAT WILL REALLY SHOW THEM WHO IS THE BOSS.

- "And know we'll never see your family more than mine"
This lyric baffles me... I don't even understand how this made the final cut. Is it insinuating that her future husband and his Family ties are less important? Or does it just make her sound like a crazy idiot that wants to cut him off from his support network?

- "Open doors for me and you might get some... *insinuates head* kisses"
I almost vomited when I deciphered this lyric.

I just feel that all the progress that feminism has made, is slowly being belittled every time someone gets 'girl power' this wrong. Even in the video, Meghan is getting objectified, whether it be when she is rolling around in soapy water on the kitchen floor or offering sex for a compliment. The Daily Mail reports the new video as the "corset-clad star makes being a Fifties housewife seriously sexy", which just makes me want to scream that there is nothing sexy about oppression.
