Leaked Moto X 2016 renders show off redesigned body and fingerprint reader

It's been a couple of days since the specifications for Motorola's upcoming refreshed Moto G handsets found their way online, so apparently it's about time Motorola's upcoming flagship lineup gets some attention.

Thanks to serial Motorola device leaker HelloMotoHK, we've got a pretty clear look at some renders for the upcoming 2016 Moto X flagship. There are two in total, with one of them even indicating that the DROID lineup for Verizon Wireless isn't going anywhere any time soon. Apparently the black-and-gold handset isn't actually a 2016 Moto X, says Evan Blass (@evleaks).

The renders show a new Moto X with a pretty big redesign, featuring a metal edge and a new, round Camera Housing on the back. What's more, that camera housing appears to protrude from the back case a bit. The camera housing design looks quite similar to the design of the Moto 360′s case, including a "flat tire" that appears to host the camera flash.

There are also distinct cutouts on the bottom of the back casing which suggest that there will be some kind of connector on the back of the handset. In one of the renders there does appear to be the same cutouts near the bottom of the casing, but they appear to be a speaker grille. That could indicate that Motorola is planning to offer different back cases for different Moto X models, or perhaps through Moto Maker for even more customization options.

As mentioned above, one of the renders does show a Moto X device with the DROID branding below those cutouts on the back cover, so it would seem like Motorola's family of devices for Verizon is getting a new member this year as well.

On the front there are a bevy of sensors above the display, as well as a front-facing camera. Below the screen there appears to be a Fingerprint Reader. This could suggest that the 2016 Moto X won't boast a pair of front-facing speakers. Verizon's checkmark is also in between the display and fingerprint reader on the DROID unit, which will probably see plenty of feedback in the future.

Unfortunately, the images weren't published with a full list of specifications, so we'll have to wait a bit longer to hear what Motorola might use in its upcoming flagship. Still, what do you think of the redesigned 2016 Moto X?
