Nice - Au Vieux Four for thin crust pizza, pasta & meats

I can't believe I haven't posted about Au Vieux Four yet! Naughty naughty me considering we used to pretty much live there, still visit quite often and have colleagues who book their hotel when they visit close by on purpose. I am a big fan of Neapolitan Pizza but I do like a bit of thin crust occasionally too and Au Vieux Four does a lovely wood-oven fired version.

I always appreciate a restaurant that provide proper sea salt and decent pepper, ideally where you can grind it yourself. So tick on this one and free olives for those who like them (like hubby).

And a good-enough house rose by the carafe. 12.50EUR for the 0.75L of wine.

I do have to say their bread is awesome, sourdough which is soft and fluffy whilst crisp and charred on top. Tasty.

One of our colleagues loves their take on a goats cheese salad so they ordered that to start with.

They don't only do pizza though that is all I ever order, they also do pasta dishes and meats. Hubby loves their lasagna that they finish off in the wood-fire oven. They tend to run out so do order it quickly if you can :) Hubby loves it.

It is filling though, so beware!

The rest of us went for pizza. This is the four cheese pizza with cantal, mozzarella, gorgonzola and goats cheeses.

This is the paysanne with chorizo and mushrooms.

Their default cheese is Cantal that they slice in house. Everyone likes it but I am a bit of a purist when it comes to pizzas so I always switch it out for mozzarella. I always get the Provencale with mozzarella which is fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers and aubergines. The crust is nice and thin and charred with that nice smokey flavour. Yum :) Filling but not too much as the crust is light and crispy.

Another friend went for a margherita as any proper Italian would and he loves it. Some of their pizzas have won national competitions so worth a try as something different to the Neapolitan craze taking over Nice.

Another day another visit, hubby this time didn't go for the lasagna and instead he went for his usual pizza here - the Royale which is the Reine plus an egg, the Reine being ham and mushroom. I was an unoriginal as usual ;) Provencale mozza being my standard order.

We went back recently with more colleagues we consider friends and though after apero and some wine carafes I forgot to take pictures of our meals, at least I remembered to take a shot of the gift we received from David the owner - courgette flower beignets - from courgettes from his garden. Awesome!

Here is the Au Vieux Four menu for your perusal. Check Au Vieux Four out if you are looking for a good solid meal in the Port area, close to Place du Pin. Run by Nicois for Nicois :) But David speaks English and tourists are welcome!
