ICI Fatwa: Vote-for-SP

With the first two rounds of Lok Sabha polls in Poorvanchal and north-eastern part of Uttar Pradesh not sending encouraging signals for Samajwadi Party (SP) the entire Executive Committee of the Imam Council of India (ICI) descended on Lucknow on Saturday to issue a 'Fatwa' asking the Muslims to vote for the Samajwadi Party, "a symbol of secularism".

The 'Fatwa' by ICI coincided with pro-BSP advertisement in a section of local Urdu dailies that listed anti-Muslim action of the government under Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The whole lot of Muftis (qualified to issue Fatwa or religious decree) headed by ICI national president Mufti Masood-ul Hasan Qasmi said that Muslims should recognise their friends in politics and vote for secular forces like the SP, the only political party that did justice to their cause when in power.

Outside Uttar Pradesh, Qasmi said, Muslims should prefer secular forces, including Congress and the Left. In the first two rounds of elections 33 Lok Sabha constituencies were involved of which SP had won 16 seats in E-2004. This time signal indicated that heatwave was not favouring SP. Uttar Pradesh would have three more rounds of pollings in Central and Western regions.

Addressing a news conference at Hotel Taj Residency ICI chief counted the sins that Mayawati government had been committing on the community and recalled that it was the same BSP supremo Mayawati who had campaigned for Narendra Modi in 2002 at the height of Gujarat communal carnage in which '3000 Muslims were massacred'.

Not only that her administration has started persecution of minorities in the state but also she had formed government with the help of BJP thrice.

Mufti Qasmi alleged that Mayawati was repeating Gujarat in Uttar Pradesh-"Muslims are being tortured and harassed". Under her regime the life, dignity and properties were not safe, the ICI declared.

For Maulana Qasmi, Kalyan Singh was a non-issue and Azam Khan's anger against Mulayam Singh on the issue was the fallout of a fight between two leaders in Rampur. If Azam Khan felt so strongly against Kalyan Singh he would not have shared power with him (Kalyan) in 2003.

At that the government was formed with the help Kalyan Singh and his son Rajveer Singh and confidante Kusum Rai were his (Azam Khan's) ministerial colleagues.

He along other members of ICI clarified that Kalyan Singh has not joined SP. He was working from outside to help Mulayam Singh Yadav to demolish 'communal' BJP. He said as the old saying goes enemy's enemy is a friend and Kalyan Singh, who as the then chief minister was responsible for the destruction of Babri Masjid in December 1992, was being used to weaken communal forces.

Yesterday an advertisement in Urdu dailies by an organisation called "UP Aqliati Morcha" had carried a photograph of Maulana Marghoobur Rahman, chief of Darul-Uloom Deoband giving blessings to Mulayam during his recent visit to the seminary.

Without naming the highly revered Maulana the ad was headlined 'Mulayam ke sar par Ulema ka haath': Mulayam Singh secularism ki alamat hain" (Mulayam Singh is symbol of secularism).

In response another organisation styled "Muslim Development Front" issued an ad asking "Ulema-e-Karam ka haath kiske sar par" (who got the blessing of the clerics?). And it asked is it for the leader who was coopted in the party the leader who had destroyed Babri Masjid?

Or for the leader during whose regime Muslim girls education centre was allowed to raided and girls were molested? Or for that leader who had marginalised Muslim leaders within the party? Posers went on.

A neta works for the entire society, consisting of all kinds of living beings. He does not only work for the mouse and ignore rabbits. If people go on asking candidates for vote for their caste men then the society will remain splintered and the cause of national integration will be defeated. No body seems to be concerned about the larger issues of malnutrition, unemployment, general health and population etc. to which all of us are affected. Influenza does not recognize caste or community, high or low, tilak or tarazu. A few years ago, I K Gujral came to Bihar to seek votes. People asked him who he was. He was introduced as Gujjar. Then they asked who Gujjar is. They were explained that Gujjar means Gwala and then Gwalas voted for him. See, in this scenario what do you expect of netas who give wrong feeding to the people for their gains.

Samajwadi Party supports the cause of the Muslims. Thus Muslims should vote for them. Moreover, Muslims should recognise who are in favour of them in the political arena.
