Jazz in a Brownstone - Bed Stuy

Now make sure you keep reading because I am going to tell you about one of New York’s hidden treasures. There is a place in Bed-Stuy (that’s Brooklyn for any non New Yorkers) which welcomes you with world class Jazz and what feels a lot like Southern hospitality.

And last Friday for Mr M’s birthday I took him there.

On arrival at the beautifully restored 1880s Brownstone sandwiched between others, we were welcomed with a big hug from Miss D who whisked our coats away and directed us to the parlour through large wooden french doors. Makeshift seating (including one couch, which we snaffled) was ready for the show.

As the evening got under way, the seats slowly filled up (a quiet night thanks to the aftermath of Sandy), and the room echoed with laughter, applause, some friendly neighbourhood banter and, of course, some pretty awesome music.  At about 11pm (intermission) we were served a ‘Fish Fry’ with coleslaw, bread and muffins before sitting down for the second set, which included some impromptu performances from Audience Members. These weren’t normal audience members though – it wasn't like me getting up to sing - these guys were in the Jazz scene.

Just after midnight we thanked our host, promising we would send all our visitors, and dragged ourselves home.

What a lovely evening!

Jazz in a Brownstone is on every Friday night at 9pm (with Fish Fry at intermission) at Sankofa Aban Bed and Breakfast in Bed Stuy. For more information check Eric Lemon's Brownstone Jazz.  Cost - $20 per person (including the Fish Fry). To get there take the A or C train to Nostram Subway Station.

Sorry about the dodgey photos, but you should be able to get the gist.
