Enjoying Small Town USA

Bucks County Dry Goods Store (nice little shop) and the Canal, Lambertville NJ

On Friday afternoon, we got a last dose of the city buzz as we sat paralysed in traffic a few blocks – and half an hour - from the entrance to the Holland Tunnel.  Less than two hours later we were breathing in the fresh and brisk country air at our friend’s new purchase – an 1840s cottage on the Delaware Canal. Ahh, the serenity.

We spent much of the weekend drifting between antique stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and then back again, and exploring small towns. Unfortunately we were just voyeurs, unlike our friends who had a whole house to furnish (we had to bring a blow up mattress).  But for $10 I did purchase a slightly battered 1930s Telechron Electric Clock that doesn’t work but might one day (Mr Mr is pretty handy). And Miss S, who I overheard stating “Listen, I’m a good bargain hunter”, proved she was, picking up a Bentwood Thonet Chair for $24!

Saturday night, having procured some goods from the Stockton Marketwe christened the kitchen. And, on Sunday, to make up for a weekend of very good eating we braved the subzero temperatures for a run along part of the canal tow-path (which runs 60mi/97km along the Delaware Canal).

Enjoying small town USA
Let’s face it, not every small town in USA is worth a visit, and the good ones can be difficult to find.  If you are looking for a weekend small town experience or are on a road-trip and want to know where to stop, have a look at Small Town Gems for recommendations (They even plot the towns on a map for you!).
