Restrained Hilltop House

Minimalist Home Overlooking Lake Zurich

The House in a Park is a minimalist collection of stone and plaster designed by Think Architecture. The house is made to “merge with the landscape” and located on a sloped parkland lot overlooking Lake Zurich. The profile of the house is single storey, however this is deceptive as there is one level hidden belowground to minimalise its impact on the landscape.

Floor to ceiling windows and skylights save the structure from being austere by framing views of rooftops and sky. The stone wrapped structure with cascading patio creates the illusion that the entire building erupts from the ground like a megalith. In the centre of the building is a double volume light well with a red cedar brse-soleil or “sun breaker” that brings light into the centre of the building.
