Utah based start up Wndr Alpine, has begun making off-piste ski’s and replacing petroleum-based plastic by algae. The replacement of plastic is not only smart environmentally but also builds more predictable, stable and durable skis. WNDR Alpine’s manager of brand development Xan Marshland told Dezeen that most oils extracted by humans as petroleum were once algae, so in essence their method is going “back to the beginning”.
Instead of the traditional method of encasing wood in fibreglass and thermoplastics bound to wood using resin of glue, the WNDR Alpine skis use wood reinforced and coated with “algal polyurethanes”. As a result of their methods, WNDR does not rely on extractive industry such as fracking, drilling or the global supply chain.
