How to develop a more effective management style

A collaborative post by Joseph Peake.

An effective management style is the key to a productive business, however a lot of business leaders struggle when they first start out.

Managing your team is a lot harder than people think. Although some people are more suited to management positions than others, this is something that you have to learn over time.

When you first start a small business, you will make mistakes. This is fine if you’re aware of what’s going wrong and you’re constantly working on rectifying things. This is the best way to develop your Effective Management Style through motivating and leading your team.

If managing a team is daunting and you feel out of your depth, these methods of developing an effective Management Style will help.

Understand the theory

People say you can’t teach somebody to be successful in business.  However it’s not really true this is just something you’re born with.

Some people do have inherent qualities which make them more suited to being a good leader. But it’s not just about being charismatic, there is actually in-depth theory that underpins good leadership.

The first step is learning about management theories for small businesses and understanding the benefits and drawbacks of different management styles. It’s also important to think which of these management theories is most applicable to you.

Of an effective management style

Most theories focus heavily into the psychology of managing a team. They give different ideas on how to motivate people to get the best out of them.

This results in a range of management styles. This ranges from very authoritative, giving your employees clear directions and instructions; to being hands off, allowing employees more freedom to decide how best to do things.

This does depends on your employees and the best way to release their potential. Remember there is no reason to stick rigidly to these styles. Understanding these theories allows you to mix and match different leadership techniques to find an Effective Management style that works for you.

Further your education

Improve your management skills through further education. Learn organisational skills, different motivational techniques and how to handle difficult employees.

Going straight into business without educating yourself means you will find it difficult to deal with the day to day managing of your team. A business degree may not be an option if you start a business later in life. Do online degrees in your spare time or find shorter business courses at evening classes or remotely online.

And there are many books about business which provide useful advice from the world’s leading business people. Constantly making an effort to learn new things will help you to run your business more effectively.

Think about your values

What is important to you both inside and outside of the workplace will have a big impact on your management style. So you need to consider what your core values are.

If personal development is important to you, foster this with your employees by giving them opportunities for promotion and investing in their training. Similarly if a family style company culture is important, focus on improving employee relationships and how they work effectively together.

Understanding your own values means you’ll be able to work out what the core values of your business should be. It’s those values and ideals that will guide your effective management style.
