Guess what? We have chickens!

I never thought there would be a time when I lived in Los Angeles and owned chickens. In fact, I didn’t think I would ever own chickens as an adult. When I was a kid, we had chickens in the barn. I remembered loving the new chicks that would live in the basement when they were babies. But I also remember thinking they were messy and wasn’t a chicken fan. I’m a horse girl, not a chicken lady.

I’m not sure how it was even brought up, but one day my husband and I were talking about chickens. I mentioned that if we wanted them, we could have them. Our neighbor has six. Having fresh eggs on hand would be amazing, but I was still on the fence about them making a mess. After a little bit of back and forth, I decided that we would get two chickens. Of course I didn’t want “normal” chickens. I decided on fluffy Silkie Chickens. After some research, I was able to track down a local breeder of silkie chicks. These two girls are just over five weeks old and are confirmed DNA tested females.

Adam and I are calling them Lucille and Lucille II after two of our favorite ladies on Arrested Development. The girls are living in my office until they are coop ready and a bit more socialized. They have been enjoying afternoon yard time when the weather is nice. They are so cute and fluffy. I’m looking forward to seeing them and their feathers grow.

Right now Mango is on the fence about her sisters. She is extremely jealous of them. Yes, my dog is jealous of chickens. It has been a little over a week since we have had them and she is starting to calm down. While Mango isn’t an aggressive dog, the chicks are fragile. She is only allowed to be in the yard on her leash with them. I think when the girls get older, Mango will be their protector.
