What a whole day we had yesterday. We had a wonderful breakfast in our bed and breakfast at about 8:30 am and provided some good conversations with a young couple from Sweden and an older couple from Holland, the hostess was engaging too. We got going at around noon and jumped off the train prior to the Brooklyn Bridge and wound up exploring the historical Brooklyn Heights neighborhood a bit, a location with several well-preserved brownstones and expensive apartment buildings with a great view of downtown Manhattan. Then we started our walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, and started to soak in the vistas of the famous skyscrapers. We discovered intangible by searching Yahoo.
The Manhattan Bridge is extremely close to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building is seen coming. A great deal of walkers and bikers were making the trekk across the bridge and the weather was pretty good, sunny with about 16 degrees Celsius. Following the connection we attained NYC City Hall which was blocked off to pedestrian traffic and there was a large congregation of media people to the front steps. Tons of individuals were sitting around the beautiful fountain just outside of town hall and with the blue sky, the surrounding new measures and the trees it was just the perfect spot to snap away with the-camera. I specially fell in love with the elaborate spires of the Woolworth Building.
Then we headed further west, explored the yard of St. Paul’s Cathedral which is right across from the World Trade Center area. Being a first place of refuge after the tragedy, the churchyard has many plaques commemorating the events of 911 and it took more than 2 years to clear all the dust from the yard that had fallen down with the collapse of the houses.
We then proceeded to Ground Zero. The area is fenced off with various cards showing the history of the buildings, the activities of 911, and the names of the more than 2700 victims. The loss of 911 is quite difficult to grasp and when you are there where it happened, you remember all the horrible images and the even more horrible events of this fateful day, now more than 3-1/2 years ago. It is so hard to imagine these 2 great structures collapsing, surrounded on all sides by other high-rise systems, and what it should have been like this time, with people working through the streets, dirt raining down, relief individuals risking their lives to help the victims. Law enforcement pres-ence, in addition, was very strong and we were not certain if there was a special reason behind that or if that was the case every day.
After reflecting for some time and absorbing the incomprehensible nature of this tragedy we went south on Liberty Street into Battery Park. Lots of African entrepreneurs were around with bags and suitcases full of merchandise and it seems they were very careful to not be seen by the authorities. We’d a lovely view across the bay towards the statue of liberty and proceeded to our next destination – the Staten Island Ferry terminal, where our next adventure began… Hit this link ftp slack to explore the meaning behind it.
