1. Character Optimization Tips

You probably heard this a lot, but make sure that your characters, including your companions, are optimized. This means that you chose good abilities, subclasses and spells for them and equipped the right items that synergise well with their builds.

Here it is helpful to follow builds made by the community to get the most out of each character. Coincidentally on Queen RPG we also have some builds prepared, that you can check out here:

2. Consumables Tips

Baldur’s Gate 3 is very generous when it comes to consumables, like spell scrolls, potions and others. Many times it happens that we gamers tend to hoard them with the premise that there will be a perfect situation where we will use the item. Unfortunately most of the time we completely forget about those items and they rot in our inventory or storage box in camp. I have to admit that I am also guilty of this habit in many cases.

Now you might ask yourself how we could fix this. Well, there are all sorts of different solutions some more useful than others. For example, you could put a sticky note on your screen with the message that you should use consumables. It might sound stupid, but if it works then that’s a valid option in my opinion.

Another more subtle way would be to organise your consumables in your characters and companion’s custom action bar. I know this takes some time with the whole inventory management, but you didn’t want to use sticky notes.

3. Terrain Tips

This tip might be obvious, but I see myself and many others forget about this. Terrain can be your enemy or best friend if you know how to use it to your advantage.

High Ground

The most obvious Terrain feature that can help you would be the classic high ground. You should know that it’s over when you don’t have the high ground if you have watched a certain movie. But what exactly does high ground do to you? Good question! It will give you a +2 to all ranged attack rolls against creatures on the low ground. Meanwhile, all creatures on the low ground have a -2 penalty on ranged attacks against you.

Now shove all archers off the high ground at take it for yourself! By the way, you can get high ground by stacking four boxes on top of each other when you are normally on even ground with the enemy. Dropping an item from your inventory is a free action so go ahead and build your box tower!

Choke Points

This is probably are rarer terrain feature, but if you have chosen the engagement wisely you can exploit it to devestate your enemies. The most common examples would be doors, bridges and Hallways. So now we know what they could look like let’s discuss how we can use them to our advantage.

First of all, you want the enemy to come towards you through the choke point, not the other way around. Second, if you can, you should prepare traps like placing explosive barrels. Next use lingering AOE (Area of Effect) Spells to cover the area, such as Entangle or Stinking Cloud or any other spell that clogs up the area with debuff and/or damage effects. Many you can get early on in the game, so it is a viable strategy even in Act 1.

4. Hireling Tips

Hirelings are literally the most useful members of your party while basically standing in your camp most of the time doing nothing. How is that you might ask. Well, we will basically use them as buff bots and crafters.

4. Buff Bot

Yes, Buff Bot is a thing now. But what do they do? The name already says it, they buff your active party members. But how do they do that when they are not in your party? Well, you do recruit them into your party for a short time after every long rest using buff spells that do not require concentration, one even gives you resistance to all damage as early as level 3.

So how does this all work? First, you need to recruit 2 Hirelings from Withers who are not Halflings. Next, we respec both of them into Cleric with the Life Domain and continue levelling them as such until the bitter end. The reason for why I chose Life Cleric is that with that they can easily heal themselves without a short rest. For their Attributes, we will focus on Con and take the Tough Feat when they reach Level 4. Basically, we want them to be as tanky as possible when it comes to HP (Hitpoints) because they will soak a bunch of damage for us.

How do they do that? Fairly simple at Level 3 they get access to a spell called Warding Bond. This spell basically splits the damage of the connected characters with the caster. Yes, you heard that right you can cast Warding Bond on multiple people! This means each of our Buff Bots will cast Warding Bond on 2 characters that we want in our party, therefore covering all 4 characters of an active party, giving everyone resistance to all damage. Just make sure to check in on them after every fight so they don’t die alone and sad in your camp and you lose all your precious resistances. To heal them up just use the Preserve Life Ability.

Buff Bot Spells

Next, you want your Buff Bots to cast all the available Non-Concentration buff spells they have on your active party members. Here is a list of all the cleric spells:

  • Aid
  • Death Ward
  • Freedom of Movement
  • Heroes’ Feast
  • Protection from Poison
  • Warding Bond

Another great thing about your Buff Bots casting those spells is, that your active members won’t need to cast them themselves. Therefore they will have more resources when you go out exploring and fighting.

Crafting Bot

Essentially what this bot does is craft all your alchemical consumables and that better than anyone else in this entire universe. How do we achieve that? By multiclassing wizard and rogue. We are doing that so we get expertise in the medicine skill which is required by a specific feature to make us more efficient in crafting.

Okay, so we will go through this process step by step. First, we need a hireling, preferably a halfling because of their Halfling Luck ability which we need because we will make a bunch of rolls when crafting. Next, we respec the Halfling into a Wizard. Here it is very important that we set the wisdom to 16 and put one of our proficiencies into medicine.

After that, you are going to take one more level in Wizard and choose the Transmuter School subclass. The reason we chose this class is because we get the Experimental Alchemy ability which allows us to craft double the amount of alchemical potions. Hold your horses though, because we will really unfold our potential as early as level 3, making us super effective at crafting early in the game. It will be achieved through multiclassing into rogue because with that we get expertise in medicine. This increases our chance to double the amount of alchemical items we craft.

With all our bases covered, I suggest taking some levels into wizard until we reach class level 6, so we get the Transmuter Stone to give our spellcasters proficiency in constitution saving throws. Also, we should pick up Longstrider to buff our party. I also tend to pick up a few levels in Bard after that, to get access to the Enhance Ability spell, to enhance our crafting capabilities even further, as well as some Bardic Inspiration.

5. Tactics Tips

One of the most useful and important things in a combat scenario is information, especially if you have information about the enemy. Now you might not know but you can inspect enemy creatures by hovering your mouse over the creature you want to inspect and then press on your keyboard “T”. This will open up a window with all sorts of stats including vulnerabilities, resistances and immunities.

With this in mind you can now easily scout out entire areas with a sneaky character like Astartion and collect a bunch of information about each opponent even before the battle starts. This is literally so helpful because now you can adjust your spell list with your prepared spellcasters like Gale or Shadowheart to specifically target the enemies’ weaknesses.

A small bonus tip for anyone who has read this far: If you want to look up any statistics for any enemy, item, ability or spell, there is a wonderful community wiki which I will link below.
