Abigail Review: A Whacky Vampire Thriller With a Twist

If you’re looking for a wild ride that combines horror, humour, and a dash of absurdity, Abigail could be just the ticket. This film, directed by the talented duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known for “Ready or Not” and the 2022 “Scream” reboot), takes a unique approach to the vampire genre.

A ragtag group of criminals kidnaps Abigail (Alisha Weir), a child-sized Vampire Ballerina. Yes, you read that correctly: a pint-sized bloodsucker pirouettes her way through life. The kidnappers, led by the suave Lambert (Giancarlo Esposito), are in over their heads. Their mission: babysit Abigail for 24 hours without becoming her next snack.

What Works

  • Alisha Weir’s Performance: She lends a quirky charm to Abigail, alternating between innocence and menace.
  • Black Humor: The film revels in its darkly comedic moments, particularly when Abigail leers at her captors.
  • Inventive Premise: A vampire ballerina? It’s delightfully bizarre and refreshingly unique.

What Doesn’t

  • Predictable Setup: The kidnapping plot is familiar, with stock characters.
  • Over-Editing: Some action scenes suffer from rushed editing, leaving us wanting more clarity.
  • Character Development: We have barely scratched the surface of the kidnappers’ personalities.

Conclusion

Abigail flirts with absurdity, which adds to its appeal. While it does not break new ground, it moves through its runtime with style. Expect to see blood, witty banter, and a vampire who moonlights as a ballerina. If you’re looking for a unique horror-comedy, give Abigail a try!
