The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, granted its approval on Wednesday to the second phase of the Green Energy Corridor Project. This phase encompasses the development of an Inter-State Transmission System to support the impressive 13-gigawatt renewable energy project located in Ladakh.

The Green Energy Corridor project is on track to be finalized by the fiscal year 2029-2030, with an approximate budget of ₹20,773.70 crore. Notably, the central government will provide financial aid amounting to 40% of the total project expenditure, which equates to ₹8,309.48 crore.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its approval on Wednesday for the second phase of the Green Energy Corridor project. This phase involves the development of an Inter-State Transmission System to support a substantial 13-gigawatt renewable energy project situated in Ladakh.
This ambitious project is slated for completion by the fiscal year 2029-2030, with an estimated budget of ₹20,773.70 crore. Of this, the central government will provide significant financial support, covering 40% of the total project cost, amounting to ₹8,309.48 crore.
Prime Minister Modi had previously announced the establishment of a 7.5-gigawatt Solar Park in Ladakh during his Independence Day address. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has formulated a comprehensive plan to establish a renewable energy generation capacity of 13 gigawatts, alongside a substantial 12 gigawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System in Pang, Ladakh.
The responsibility for implementing this project falls on the Power Grid Corporation, which will deploy cutting-edge technology, including the Voltage Source Converter based High Voltage Direct Current system and Extra High Voltage Alternating Current technology, to bring this initiative to fruition.
The transmission lines for transferring this power will traverse Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, ultimately connecting to the National Grid in Kaithal, Haryana. Additionally, an interconnection is in the works from this project in Leh to the existing Ladakh grid, ensuring a reliable and consistent power supply to Ladakh, as per government statements.

Furthermore, the project will establish a vital connection to the Leh-Alusteng-Srinagar line, enabling the provision of power to Jammu & Kashmir. The scope of the project includes the installation of 713 kilometers of transmission lines, which encompasses a 480-kilometer High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) line. In addition, there will be High Voltage Direct Current terminals, each with a 5-gigawatt capacity, situated in Pang (Ladakh) and Kaithal (Haryana), as detailed in the government release.
This endeavor is poised to make a significant contribution toward attaining the national objective of achieving 500 gigawatts of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030. Notably, it will play a crucial role in enhancing the long-term energy security of the country, fostering ecologically sustainable growth, and reducing the carbon footprint. Furthermore, it is expected to create substantial employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly, for individuals with diverse skill sets in the power and related sectors, particularly in the Ladakh region.
This project operates in tandem with the ongoing Intra-State Transmission System, known as Green Energy Corridor Phase-II, which is currently being implemented in various states including Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. Its primary objectives encompass grid integration and the effective evacuation of power resources.
