Ludhiana Doctor Receives the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award for Memorial Oration 2023

Dr. Dinesh Badyal, the Vice Principal for Medical Education at Christian Medical College, was honored with the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial Oration Award by King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow. This award was given as a part of the celebration of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s birth anniversary. Dr. Kalam, affectionately known as the “people’s president,” served as the 11th President of India.

In his oration, Dr. Badyal discussed the topic of “Igniting Minds in the New Competency-Based Medical Curriculum: Challenges and the Way Forward,” drawing inspiration from Dr. Kalam’s renowned book, “Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India.”

Dr. Badyal has played a significant role in shaping the new competency-based medical curricula for MBBS and MD programs in India. This work included training faculty members in teaching, learning, assessment, professionalism, ethics, curriculum development, and using low-resource simulations in Southeast Asia. His efforts have been pivotal in promoting competency-based education.

Furthermore, Dr Dinesh Badyal is actively engaged in both international and national medical education and research programs, particularly in the field of pharmacology. He has an impressive track record with over 150 published papers, three authored books, and contributions to chapters in various publications.

Dr. Badyal emphasized that these new initiatives in medical education highlight the potential of India’s extensive community of medical educators. These tailored initiatives aim to benefit medical colleges across the country. Dr. Badyal has been instrumental in training numerous medical educators in India and other countries, serving as the program director of CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute, the convener of NMC’s nodal center for faculty development, and the national convener for NMC’s advanced course in medical education.
