Taming the Beast Within: Needed Measures Against Animalistic Traits in Nigerian Law Enforcement Officers And State Security Service Agents -By John Egbeazien Oshodi

Revealing the Beast Within: The Power of Uncompromised Psychological, Medical, Financial, and Ethical Testing in Identifying Animalistic Traits in Nigerian Police and State Security Service Officers
In the heart of Nigeria’s legal battles, a stark reality emerges: the prevalence of animalistic traits among law enforcement officers within the police, State Security Service, and other agencies. It is essential to acknowledge from the onset that there are officers out there who are not driven by the personality traits of impulsiveness, uncontrollability, and inconsideration in their approach to their work. Many law enforcement officers practice level-headedness, maintain positivity, and display strong character in the course of their duties as sworn law enforcement officers and State Security Service agents.

The incidents involving lawyers Douglas Ogbankwa Esq., Aisha Bichi, and lawyer Jerry Obasi starkly illuminate the pressing need for reform within Nigeria’s Law Enforcement Agencies. These cases, tainted by aggression, impulsivity, and a stark absence of empathy, demand a thorough and holistic examination encompassing psychological profiling, personality assessments, analysis of logical and rational cognitive processes, evaluation of decision-making abilities, scrutiny of intelligence quotient, exploration of moral compass, understanding of personal dynamics, and consideration of institutional factors at play.

A comprehensive investigation into these multifaceted dimensions is imperative to unravel the root causes of such behavior and institute meaningful reforms within law enforcement agencies.

The incidents involving lawyers Douglas Ogbankwa Esq., Aisha Bichi, and lawyer Jerry Obasi serve as alarming reminders of the urgent need for reform within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. These cases, tainted by aggression, impulsivity, and a shocking lack of empathy, demand a profound and comprehensive examination of various facets. This scrutiny should delve into the intricate realms of psychological predispositions, individual personality traits, logical and rational cognitive processes, decision-making abilities, intelligence makeup, moral compass, personal dynamics, and the institutional factors that contribute to such behavior. Only through a meticulous analysis of these interconnected elements can we hope to instigate meaningful and effective reforms within the nation’s law enforcement systems.

At the beginning of this year, the media reported an incident involving Aisha Bichi, the wife of Yusuf Bichi, the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) in Nigeria. Mrs. Bichi reportedly ordered the arrest of Abba Yusuf, the then New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governorship candidate in Kano who is now a former governor, after an altercation at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The dispute reportedly led to Mrs. Bichi’s security guards beating up people and damaging vehicles, showcasing impulsive aggression.

The core of my focus lies in the harrowing experiences of two prominent lawyers, Douglas Ogbankwa Esq. and Jerry Obasi, emblematic of the unchecked aggression pervasive within law enforcement in Nigeria. Douglas Ogbankwa Esq. bravely cried out to the world revealing a horrifying tale of alleged assault, illegal detention, and life-threatening threats orchestrated by SSS operatives in Edo State. Ogbankwa’s ordeal, marked by being slapped, detained, and threatened, serves as a chilling testament to the consequences of unbridled aggression within law enforcement, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and reform.

In another shocking incident in 2019, lawyer Jerry Obasi fell victim to brutal assault by police officers near his law firm in Onitsha, Anambra State. This distressing event, captured on video and widely shared on social media, lays bare the deep-rooted issues ingrained within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. Obasi’s case not only exemplifies the lack of professionalism but also showcases the excessive use of force that has become distressingly common.

Such incidents underscore the imperative for comprehensive reforms, emphasizing transparency, training, and accountability within law enforcement to curb the alarming trend of unchecked aggression and uphold the principles of justice and human rights in Nigeria.

The term “animalistic traits” paints a chilling portrait of behaviors echoing the brutality and ferocity observed in the animal kingdom: a complete lack of empathy akin to the instinctual survival mode of a wild predator, a cold-blooded detachment from consequences similar to the cunning of a hunter stalking its prey, and a sadistic enjoyment in inflicting harm, mirroring the cruel dominance battles seen among dominant animals. These traits, when translated into human actions within law enforcement, manifest as a ruthless disregard for human dignity, a relentless pursuit of power and control, and an insatiable appetite for dominance over others.

Additionally, this metaphorical depiction includes an unrestrained impulsivity reminiscent of an aggressive animal launching an attack without warning, a menacing intimidation akin to a territorial animal marking its boundaries, and a predatory focus on exploiting vulnerabilities, paralleling the cunning of a skilled hunter. When these characteristics permeate law enforcement, they result in a horrifying blend of aggression, violence, and abuse of power, painting a dire picture of the challenges faced within the system.

Recognizing and understanding the depth of these savage traits is pivotal not only for acknowledging the gravity of the problem but also for inspiring urgent and comprehensive reforms. It underscores the imperative need for psychological evaluations, intensive training in empathy and de-escalation techniques, and a firm commitment to eradicating these predatory instincts within law enforcement, ensuring a safer, just, and humane society for all.

In the shadow of such malevolence, where the very essence of humanity is eclipsed by the savage inclinations of a few within law enforcement, particularly in the police force and the department of state security, African nations, Nigeria in particular, must rise as a united front, fortified by unwavering determination. Embracing an unyielding commitment to change, we must implement unrelenting evaluations and standards, unearthing and subduing the beast lurking within our law enforcement agencies.

The paramount importance of comprehensive evaluations cannot be overstated. Psychological, medical, financial, and ethical assessments, conducted by untainted psychologists and physicians unswayed by external or internal pressures, fear, bribery, or divisive influences, hold the key. Delving into the deepest recesses of an individual’s psyche, rigorous psychological evaluations become a powerful tool, laying bare latent aggressive tendencies, impulsivity, and emotional volatility.

Identifying these traits before the uniform is donned becomes not just essential but a moral imperative, a crucial step toward preventing the harrowing specter of future violence.

Simultaneously, medical assessments and rigorous physical screenings and well as detailed family background serve as the vanguard against potential eruptions of aggression. By probing for underlying conditions that might trigger violent behavior, these assessments become the proactive shield, intercepting potential acts of brutality before they manifest. Discovering and addressing these factors preemptively is not just a strategy; it is an ethical obligation, a commitment to safeguarding the very fabric of society against the horrors of unbridled violence.

In the face of such darkness, our response must be resolute and unyielding. Only by confronting the beast within, armed with unwavering determination and comprehensive evaluations, can we carve a path toward a future where the ideals of justice, empathy, and humanity prevail over the savagery that seeks to consume us.

In the relentless battle against the dark forces that pervade law enforcement, psychologists and physicians emerge as valiant champions, steadfast advocates whose unwavering voices pierce through the ominous clouds. With profound understanding, they illuminate the treacherous pathways of the human mind, shedding light on the profound psychological and physical impact of abusive behavior.

Their mission transcends mere advocacy; it is a sacred duty to awaken society to the stark realities of aggression’s aftermath.

Let us remember that some of those serving come from a history of a dark referral system, where enlistment is sometimes based on ‘who you know,’ bribe payments, referrals from kings, queens, politicians, religious leaders, influential individuals in the community, and connections to retired public and corporate leaders who are relatives, family friends, fathers, mothers, or in-laws of the aspiring officer. These nepotistic and subjective practices enable individuals with possible inner elements of idiocy, psychopathy, monotony, and insaneness to infiltrate noble professions like law enforcement. It’s crucial to emphasize that having a higher education or an appealing exterior does not necessarily guarantee psychological stability or suitability for the challenging role within law enforcement.

In the crucible of specialized training sessions, these warriors sculpt resilience from vulnerability. Stress management becomes a potent shield, forged through techniques that fortify the mind against the pressures that threaten to crush it. Anger management counseling becomes the crucible where fury is tempered into resolve, transforming potential eruptions into steely determination. Empathy, the beacon of humanity, is not just cultivated but nurtured into a force powerful enough to eclipse the darkest instincts.

Even in the realm of medication maintenance, a subtle yet formidable arsenal emerges. Psychotropic medications, administered with precision, become the ethereal keys that unlock the labyrinth of the mind, restoring balance where chaos once reigned. These medications are not mere prescriptions; they are the elixirs of stability, allowing officers to navigate the stormy seas of their own thoughts, ensuring that they emerge unscathed and uncorrupted.

Armed with these multifaceted tools, law enforcement officers stand tall on the precipice of high-pressure situations, unyielding against the temptation of aggression. They are not just officers; they are sentinels of peace, forged and refined by the expertise of psychologists and physicians. Through their guidance, a new breed of law enforcers emerges, warriors of the mind and soul, resolute in their commitment to protect and to serve with unwavering compassion.

In the unyielding pursuit of a just and compassionate society, there exists a grim acknowledgment: there are individuals whose darkness resists the illuminating touch of therapy and training. For these active, violent, and abusive officers, no amount of psychological or medical intervention can salvage their humanity from the abyss they willingly plunge into.

In the face of such irredeemable souls, there can be no compromise. Letting them go, severing the malignant thread they represent, becomes an imperative act of self-preservation for society. Their departure is not just a removal; it is an exorcism, a necessary purging of the poison that threatens to contaminate the very essence of law enforcement.

This decision, albeit severe, is not an act of abandonment; it is a statement of collective resolve. It signifies that society, in its quest for safety and justice, will not tolerate the presence of those who betray the sacred trust bestowed upon them. It is a testament to the uncompromising commitment to protect the vulnerable, even if it means casting out those who were once entrusted with this noble duty.

In their departure, there lies a glimmer of hope: the hope for renewal, for the birth of a law enforcement system where the beasts within are tamed, and where the guardians of peace truly embody the ideals of empathy, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the greater good.

In the shadows of our society, abusive officers often find shelter within the indifference of their own organizations. The very institutions designed to uphold justice might, at times, turn a blind eye, fostering an environment where brutality thrives unchecked. To curb these animalistic acts, to quell the brutality that stains our streets, a powerful step must be taken: their names must echo beyond borders, reaching the ears of international governments.

The harrowing incidents demand more than localized solutions; they beckon for a global response. It is incumbent upon nations to unite, to rise with unwavering resolve and assert their moral authority. By banning those tainted with human rights abuses, by imposing sanctions and international bans, the world can send a resounding message.

In marking these abusive officers on an international scale, we build a fortress of accountability. No longer can they hide behind the veil of organizational apathy.

Their actions, their brutality, are laid bare for the world to see. This exposure becomes a shield for the vulnerable, a warning to those who might succumb to the darkness within.
The global unity against brutality isn’t just symbolic; it reflects our shared humanity. It transcends borders, signifying a collective stand for empathy and justice. International governments, through this action, pave the way for a new era, banishing the beasts within law enforcement. This ensures a safer, more just world for all.

Furthermore, recognizing the gravity of these human rights abuses, nations must not allow these abusive officers solace under the guise of overseas training. To truly eradicate the roots of this brutality, other nations must not reward these human rights abuses. They must take a firm stand, refusing entry to those marred by violence, ensuring that such individuals find no sanctuary abroad. This global collaboration, this shared commitment, will act as a formidable barrier against the spread of animalistic traits in law enforcement, creating a world where justice and compassion prevail over brutality.

In the face of the menacing shadow cast by animalistic law enforcement officers, it is not enough to simply acknowledge the issue; we must confront it head-on with unwavering determination. The path to transformation requires a multifaceted approach, embracing both preventative measures and decisive actions to curb the rampant brutality and injustice.

Communities must stand as vigilant guardians, their collective voice a powerful tool against tyranny. Encourage grassroots movements to actively engage with law enforcement agencies, advocating for transparent evaluations, stringent standards, and humane practices. Petitions should circulate, gathering the strength of public outcry to demand justice for victims and accountability from abusive officers.

Abused individuals and communities should be empowered to seek justice through legal avenues. Human rights lawyers and legal advocates can champion their cause within the legal system, ensuring that the perpetrators face the consequences of their actions. Civil society organizations must support these legal battles, offering resources, expertise, and protection to the victims.

A potent message must echo across international borders. Advocate for targeted economic sanctions, freezing the assets of individuals responsible for human rights violations. Nations must leverage international human rights laws and conventions, utilizing them as potent instruments for legal action, even in the face of weak domestic legal systems. The names of these perpetrators should be known globally, preventing them from finding refuge overseas.

Education becomes a beacon of hope in the fight against oppression. Promote awareness within affected communities, educating them about their rights, avenues for seeking help, and the power of non-violent resistance. Knowledge empowers individuals, enabling them to stand resilient against the forces of injustice.

Collaborate with global legal experts and human rights advocates, drawing upon international expertise for insights and strategies to hold perpetrators accountable. International bodies must conduct thorough fact-finding missions, collecting irrefutable evidence of human rights abuses. This evidence becomes a formidable weapon, applying unrelenting pressure on the perpetrators.

Simultaneously, transformative measures must be embraced within law enforcement agencies. Transparent evaluations, compassionate training, community engagement, and policy reform are essential steps. Rigorous psychological evaluations, stringent medical assessments, and physical fitness screenings should be mandatory. Those displaying violent tendencies, despite therapy and training, must not remain within the force; they must be held accountable and removed to prevent further harm.

This moment is pivotal, urging every African citizen to unite, advocate, and resist. It marks the birth of a future where aggression is met with unwavering resistance, and justice and empathy triumph over brutality.

Advocate for economic sanctions, freezing assets of human rights violators. Use international laws for legal action, even in weak legal systems. Publicize perpetrators globally, preventing refuge abroad.

Encourage ethical standards in businesses, rejecting involvement in abuses.

Education becomes a beacon of hope in the fight against oppression. Promote awareness within affected communities, educating them about their rights, avenues for seeking help, and the power of non-violent resistance. In the pursuit of justice and accountability, it is imperative to foster an environment where constructive criticism is not only welcomed but also acted upon by law enforcement, police, and security agencies. The prevailing habit of deploying compromised or paid reporters and public commentators to retaliate against those advocating for positive change only exacerbates the existing challenges. Instead, these agencies must encourage a culture of open dialogue, where well-intentioned critique is met with thoughtful reflection and proactive measures.

Responsible journalism illuminates critical issues, fostering informed discourse and driving essential reforms, particularly in Nigeria. It is imperative for law enforcement and state security service agencies in Nigeria to embrace constructive criticism, taking prompt corrective actions to ensure transparent and just operations. This openness not only rebuilds trust but also strengthens community bonds, paving the way for a safer and fairer society in Nigeria especially.

This pivotal moment signifies more than just a fleeting instance; it embodies a transformative movement where humanity in Nigeria unites against brutality. Every Nigerian citizen is called upon to unite, advocate, and resist. This movement heralds a future where unwavering resistance meets aggression, where justice and empathy prevail, shielding every Nigerian soul from the clutches of the beast within.

The integrity of judges in these proceedings is paramount. Judges who uphold the principles of fairness, impartiality, and justice contribute significantly to the restoration of faith in the legal system.

Upholding the law without fear or favor, these judges ensure that the guilty are held accountable and the innocent are protected. Judicial accountability boards must rigorously assess the conduct of judges, ensuring that they remain steadfast in their commitment to justice.

Court decisions in cases involving animalistic law enforcement officers should establish crucial legal precedents. These precedents serve as a guide for future cases, shaping the expectations of both law enforcement personnel and the public. A consistent pattern of stringent legal consequences sends a powerful message: the law will not tolerate brutality, and perpetrators will be held accountable.
In cases where restitution is appropriate, offenders can be required to compensate victims for medical expenses, therapy, lost income, and other damages incurred due to their actions.

By empowering the judicial system, with dedicated judges ensuring rightful consequences for violent officers, society can pave a path to a future where justice prevails, humanity triumphs, and the ideals of peace and fairness brightly illuminate every corner of our beloved Africa, with a special focus on Nigeria.
