iFixit Lowers iPhone 14 Repairability Score Due to Software Locks

iFixit, the well-known Repairability advocate, has reevaluated the repairability of the iPhone 14, leading to a lower repairability score due to software restrictions imposed by Apple. Here are the details:

Previous Repairability Rating

- Initially, iFixit gave the iPhone 14 a repairability rating of 7/10, highlighting its updated internal design that facilitated easier repairs.

Updated Repairability Score

- iFixit has retroactively lowered the iPhone 14's repairability score to 4/10 following reassessment.

- The revised rating takes into account the significant hurdles users face when attempting major repairs, such as fixing cracked screens or back panels.

Software Limitations

- Apple's policy of part-pairing remains in place, leading to software limitations if repair parts are not Apple-approved.

- Replacement of components, including the back glass panel, may require software validation from Apple.

- Users with non-validated parts may encounter pop-up warnings about non-genuine parts or experience reduced functionality depending on the replaced component.

Independent Repair Provider Program

- Independent repair shops participating in Apple's Independent Repair Provider Program are compelled to share customers' personal information with Apple.

- These repair providers must also agree to undergo audits for a duration of five years to continue offering Apple-approved repairs.

Apple has yet to address concerns related to these software-locked repairs, which have led to iFixit's revised repairability rating for the iPhone 14. This development underscores ongoing debates surrounding the "right to repair" and the obstacles faced by users and independent repair professionals.
