Google Pixel 9: Tensor G4 SoC Upgrades May Be Modest, Suggests Report

Google enthusiasts, mark your calendars for October 4, as Google has officially announced a hardware event where the highly anticipated Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones will make their debut. Let's dive into what we know so far about these upcoming devices and the future of Google's in-house chip technology.

The Pixel 8 Series and Tensor G3 SoC

At the heart of the Pixel 8 series lies the next-generation Tensor G3 System on Chip (SoC). This chip is set to outperform its predecessor, the Tensor G2 SoC that currently powers the Pixel 7 series. While Google has remained tight-lipped about specific details, this upgrade promises enhanced performance and capabilities.

The Future: Pixel 9 Series with Tensor G4 SoC

Looking ahead to 2023, Google is already planning the Pixel 9 series. These devices are expected to feature the Tensor G4 SoC, internally known as "Zuma Pro." While it may not bring groundbreaking changes over the Tensor G3, it's sure to provide minor performance upgrades. This semi-custom chip will be co-designed with Samsung's System LSI division, ensuring a solid performance foundation.

Beyond 2023: The Fully Custom Tensor Chip

Google's long-term vision includes a Fully Custom Tensor chip, codenamed "Redondo," originally intended for its 2024 Pixel Series. Unfortunately, production delays have pushed its debut to 2025. To develop this groundbreaking chip, Google has created a dedicated development board known as "ChallengerDeep."

The Next Frontier: Pixel 10 Series and "Laguna Beach"

As if that weren't enough, Google is already hard at work on the fully custom Tensor chip for its 2025 Pixel series, codenamed "Laguna Beach." The development board for this ambitious project goes by the name "Deepspace." These chips promise to deliver unprecedented performance and capabilities, setting a new standard for Google's future flagship devices.

What to Expect at the October 4 Event

As we await the Pixel 9 and its successors, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are set to shine at the "Made by Google" event on October 4 in New York, scheduled for 10:00 am local time (7:30 pm IST). These devices are expected to run Android 14, featuring 120Hz refresh rate displays. The Pixel 8 Pro is rumored to sport a robust 4,950mAh battery with 27W wired fast charging, while the Pixel 8 may come with a 4,485mAh battery, supporting 24W wired charging and 12W wireless charging.

Additionally, Google will unveil the Pixel Watch 2 and introduce a new color variant for the Pixel Buds Pro during this event.

Stay tuned for more updates as we approach this exciting Google hardware event.
