HMD Global, the Finnish company responsible for releasing Nokia-branded smartphones for the past seven years, has announced plans to introduce a new line of smartphones under its own HMD brand. This expansion of its portfolio will run alongside its existing Nokia handsets.

The journey began in 2017 when HMD Global launched the Nokia 6 as the first Nokia-branded Android smartphone. Initially exclusive to China, it later became available in other markets. The latest addition to HMD Global's lineup in India is the Nokia G42 5G.

CEO of HMD Global, Jean-Francois Baril, shared on LinkedIn that the company is set to broaden its offerings with a new range of HMD-branded mobile devices, in addition to Nokia devices and partnerships with new collaborators. He emphasized the company's position as the fastest-growing 5G smartphone manufacturer year over year and its leadership in sustainability with repairable Nokia devices.

While details about the new HMD products and potential release dates were not provided in the LinkedIn post, Baril expressed the company's readiness to enter the market independently, focusing on consumer needs and creating a new telecommunications landscape.

HMD Global's smartphone journey commenced with the Nokia 6 in 2017 and expanded to include models like Nokia 8, Nokia 2, and various Nokia-branded phones. Most recently, the company unveiled the Nokia G42 5G in India, featuring a 6.56-inch HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ SoC, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The device is equipped with a triple rear camera setup, led by a 50-megapixel primary sensor, and is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 20W wired fast charging support. It will be available for purchase starting September 15 through Amazon, with pricing starting at Rs. 12,599 for the sole 6GB RAM + 128GB storage model, and color options including So Grey and So Purple.
