Panzer III with the designation II02 encountered difficulties – Sdkfz 251s from the 9th Panzer Division passed by behind it.

At first, the Panzer Iii was equipped with the same 3.7 cm gun utilized by infantry for anti-tank purposes. Nevertheless, subsequent versions were upgraded to feature a 5 cm gun. However, due to the constraints of the turret ring size, this was the largest gun that could be accommodated, rendering it ineffective against Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks. As a result, the Panzer IV, boasting a larger turret ring, underwent a redesign to accommodate the powerful long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun, ultimately emerging as the principal German tank.
