Did you know? The Western Allies were aware of the PzKpfw V Panther tank and had access to technical details through the Soviets. However, there existed a disparity in perception between the American and British camps regarding the tank’s significance. The British, who had spent two years catching up with German tank design in Africa, were cautious about falling behind once more. They had successfully developed the formidable 17-pounder anti-tank gun but had not yet deployed a vehicle capable of housing this large gun within its turret.

Conversely, the U.S. Army did not view the Panther as a major concern and did not anticipate their armored forces engaging in significant battles against substantial numbers of Panther tanks. The Panther tank remained unseen in combat by the Western Allies until early 1944, when small numbers of Panthers were introduced during the Anzio campaign in Italy.
