Absolute Truth

 ABSOLUTE -

In recent years tolerance has become a virtue – you believe what you want, I’ll believe what I want, and everyone will be happy and get along. But if everyone did what they wanted, it wouldn’t take long for chaos and anarchy to reign, and everyone would not get along. There must be some rules, some laws that all people must follow all the time. When people follow these rules, societies function well. Thus, there must be some absolute truths, set into place from the beginning, that apply to all people all the time. When people live by these truths, these laws, a society functions well. Ironically, tolerance, which embraces every kind of idea or belief, denies the existence of absolutes.

The only absolute is that there are no absolutes! The Bible makes it clear that absolutes do exist and that absolute truth begins with God. It reveals the truths that make the world work, that make relationships work, and that determine our future. By studying these truths and living by them, we discover the way life really works. God’s truth sets us free from a meaningless and chaotic life to a certain and eternal future where life will always make sense and will be fair, just, and full of joy.

What is absolute truth?

John 3:33

Anyone who accepts his testimony can affirm that God is true.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

Psalm 119:160

The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever.

Psalm 111:8

They are forever true, to be obeyed faithfully and with integrity.

Psalm 119:91

Your regulations remain true to this day, for everything serves your plans.

Proverbs 12:19

Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed.

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.

Romans 3:4

Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. As the Scriptures say about him, “You will be proved right in what you say, and you will win your case in court.”

Ephesians 4:24

Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Absolute truth has been defined as “that which is true for all people, for all times, for all places. Absolute truth is objective, universal, and constant.” Absolute truth originates from God, who didn’t just create truth, but who is truth.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

Exodus 20:1-17

Then God gave the people all these instructions . . .

Nehemiah 9:13

You came down at Mount Sinai and spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and instructions that were just, and decrees and commands that were good.

Psalm 111:7

All he does is just and good, and all his commandments are trustworthy.

Psalm 119:128, 142, 151

Each of your commandments is right. That is why I hate every false way . . . Your justice is eternal, and your instructions are perfectly true . . . But you are near, O Lord, and all your commands are true.

There must be some standards upon which human life is based, standards that, if followed, create peace and harmony and order in relationships. God has set these standards and if we follow them, we have greater joy and purpose. We can argue they don’t exist or they shouldn’t exist or they aren’t what we’re looking for, but that doesn’t change the reality that they exist for our ultimate benefit.

Malachi 3:6

"I am the LORD, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.

Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?

Hebrews 6:18

So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

James 1:17

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

Romans 1:20

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Matthew 5:17-18

"Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. [18] I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God's law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.

John 1:1-3, 14

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He existed in the beginning with God. [3] God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. [14] So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son.

John 14:6

Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

God’s eternal, unchanging nature is the basis for truth. The universe was created by God, and even in its broken state, its natural laws reflect God’s perfect power, order, creativity, and wisdom. His perfect love and holiness defines moral truth. He knows everything, and he cannot lie, so everything he speaks is true. He is perfectly just and fair, yet he also offered his Son as a perfect sacrifice for our sins—a sacrifice that washes away our sins for all time. In the end, everything that is eternal can be traced back to God’s perfect nature.

What makes a truth absolutely certain?

Job 34:12

Truly, God will not do wrong. The Almighty will not twist justice.

Psalm 18:30

God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.

Psalm 33:4

For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does.

Psalm 19:7

The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

Proverbs 30:5

Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.

In their book, Right from Wrong, Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler define absolute truth as “that which is true for all people, for all times, for all places. Absolute truth is truth that is objective, universal, and constant.” Therefore, absolute truth must originate from God, who didn’t just create truth, but who is truth.

Are there really absolutes in life? And if so, how can I know what they are?

Judges 21:25

In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

James 4:11

If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.

Imagine you’ve just bought a new phone or computer. You can ignore the instructions for using it, and it will still work. But you’ll miss many of the great things it was meant to do, and you’ll miss much of what you could have enjoyed. Now let’s say that instead of ignoring the instructions, you purposely do the opposite of what the manual tells you to do. Now you’ve got a bigger problem. Your phone or computer will frustrate you every day because nothing will work right. There’s a certain way to get these gadgets to work, and the Instruction book tells you what that way is. It’s the same with life. The Bible is God’s instruction manual for life. God has programmed certain absolutes into the world, and they apply to all people, in all times, and in all places. Ignore God’s instructions, and you’ll miss much of what God intends for you to enjoy. But go against his instructions, and chances are that you’ll end up hurt, frustrated, and disappointed. That’s why it is so important not only to read the Bible and discover God’s absolutes but also to live by them. Doing so can make life much smoother, and it will certainly be more fulfilling.

Why do we need absolutes? Can’t we just do our own thing?

Proverbs 21:2

People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart.

Jeremiah 7:28

Say to them, “This is the nation whose people will not obey the Lord their God and who refuse to be taught. Truth has vanished from among them; it is no longer heard on their lips.”

Jeremiah 9:3-6

“My people bend their tongues like bows to shoot out lies. They refuse to stand up for the truth. They only go from bad to worse. They do not know me,” says the Lord. “Beware of your neighbor! Don’t even trust your brother! For brother takes advantage of brother, and friend slanders friend. They all fool and defraud each other; no one tells the truth. With practiced tongues they tell lies; they wear themselves out with all their sinning. They pile lie upon lie and utterly refuse to acknowledge me,” says the Lord.

Proverbs 2:6, 9-10

For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. . . . Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy.

Psalm 51:5

For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.

From the beginning of time we can see examples of individuals doing what was right in their own eyes with resulting catastrophic consequences to themselves and others. Scripture teaches that we are all born with the desire to sin, and doing our own thing will always lead us away from God, the source of all truth and goodness. Our job is not to pass judgment on God’s ways by devising our own way, but to follow God and all he says.

There seem to be so many gray areas when it comes to right and wrong. How can I tell what is absolutely right?

Exodus 20:1-17

Then God gave the people all these instructions . . . John 14:15

If you love me, obey my commandments.

God has given us his Word, the Bible, which gives many clear and specific instructions about good and evil. Though sometimes, we may find ourselves in a situation where we must prioritize, or even a situation the Bible doesn’t directly address, these clear instructions form a strong foundation for our decision making.

John 14:17

He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. John 15:26

But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.

John 16:13

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

John 14:26

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative-that is, the Holy Spirit-he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Romans 8:5

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:11-12, 16

No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us . . . For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.

1 John 2:27

But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.

Galatians 5:16

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

God has given us the Holy Spirit who will help us live obediently and teach us absolute truth. Not only does he remind us of the truths found in God’s Word, but he shapes our minds and hearts to become more like Christ’s. As we grow closer to holding the same motives and priorities as God, making difficult moral decisions will grow more natural. Discerning moral truth involves more than memorizing the letter of the law—we must seek the heart of the Lawgiver. This is where the Holy Spirit leads us.

What are some of the absolutes of the Christian faith?

Exodus 20:1-17

Then God gave the people all these instructions . . . “You must not have any other god but me.” God gave us the Ten Commandments. They are absolute truths that apply to all people in all cultures for all time. Obeying these commandments will point one’s life in the right direction, make it more fulfilling and satisfying, avoiding much harm, and keeping one’s focus on the only God who can grant eternal life.

Psalm 147:5

How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!

Numbers 11:23

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Has my arm lost its power? Now you will see whether or not my word comes true!”

Acts 5:29

But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.

Romans 8:31-39

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? . . . No . . .  nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Malachi 3:6

I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.

Hebrews 6:17-18

God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?

1 Chronicles 16:34

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.

James 1:17

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

God’s character is unchanging. He is consistently all-powerful, absolutely good, the originator of truth, all-wise, consistently faithful and loves us unconditionally.

John 14:6

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

Acts 16:31

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”

Romans 3:22, 30

We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are . . . There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is absolutely only one way for a person to enjoy eternal life in heaven. Salvation is a gift from God available to us through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Acts 13:38-39

Brothers, listen! We are here to proclaim that through this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in him is made right in God’s sight—something the law of Moses could never do.

1 John 1:9

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

God’s forgiveness is absolute. When he forgives you, it is forever. He never takes it back.

Acts 2:24, 31

But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip . . . David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.

1 Corinthians 15:4-6, 20

He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died . . . But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is an absolute truth of the Christian faith. Because he was raised from the dead, he has conquered death, and therefore his promise of eternal life to all who have faith in him is certain.

Ephesians 1:13-14

And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. Acts 2:38-39

Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

The presence of the Holy Spirit is an absolute guarantee to those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

1 John 2:24-25

So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father. And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us.

Titus 1:2

This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began.

John 3:16

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

John 11:25-26

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Eternal life is a promised gift to those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
